In May 2010, California student Jeremy Sturdivant, then 19, noticed a bizarre request on a cryptocurrency\u00a0Internet forum: He could receive 10,000 Bitcoins, at the time reportedly valued at $41<\/a>, in exchange for the delivery of two large pizzas to Florida resident\u00a0Laszlo Hanyecz, 28.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sturdivant filled the order,\u00a0sending him two large pizzas (cheese and \u201csupreme\u201d) from Papa John\u2019s \u2014 a transaction that would become the first physical purchase made with Bitcoin in history, marked by the annual Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22.<\/p>\n

But Sturdivant didn\u2019t save the Bitcoins for the future; instead, he spent them all<\/em> on travel<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Today, that lowly 10,000 Bitcoin haul would be worth a pie-in-the-sky $365 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had no idea how huge it would become,\u201d Sturdivant said. But despite losing out on boundless riches, the now-30-year-old said he is \u201cproud to have played a part\u201d in the \u201cglobal phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tale is now the stuff of Bitcoin legend. In his May 18, 2010, Bitcointalk.org post<\/a>, Hanyecz \u2014 a forum contributor \u2014 made the request, including his palate preferences: \u201cI like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that,\u201d he wrote. <\/p>\n

Sturdivant followed through on Hanyecz\u2019s app<\/a>eal \u2014 and the rest is history.<\/p>\n

Launched in 2009, Bitcoin wouldn\u2019t reach a 1:1 with the dollar until early 2011. And although the price is volatile even today, it\u2019s safe to say that Sturdivant\u2019s haul could have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars had he decided to invest the funds. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had treated it as an investment, I might have held on a bit longer,\u201d Sturdivant told the Telegraph in 2018<\/a> of spending his earnings on a road trip with his girlfriend. \u201cI would never have thought that the same number of Bitcoin would have a purchasing power on the order of real estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRetrospectively,\u201d Sturdivant admitted to Bitcoin Who\u2019s Who, it\u2019s \u201ccrazy\u201d to think of anyone having that much Bitcoin today.<\/p>\n

And, like Sturdivant, Hanyecz has said in previous interviews that he does not regret his craving-induced purchase. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to do the pizza thing because to me it was free pizza,\u201d he told Bitcoin Magazine in 2019<\/a>. \u201cI got pizza for contributing to an open-source project. Usually hobbies are a time sink and money sink, and in this case, my hobby bought me dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that it\u2019s great that I got to be part of the early history of Bitcoin in that way,\u201d he told Coin Telegraph in 2018<\/a>. Hanyecz, now 39, went on to spend 100,000 Bitcoin \u2014 currently $3.8 billion \u2014 on pizzas alone in the summer of 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to think that what I did helped,\u201d he added. \u201cBut I think if it wasn\u2019t me, somebody else would have come along.\u201d<\/p>\n
