Former Republican senator and presidential candidate Rick Santorum does not hold a grudge toward CNN after the network fired him as a contributor last week over remarks he made about Native Americans. <\/p>\n

\u201cCNN has the right to fire me,\u201d Santorum told Fox News<\/a>\u2019 \u201cHannity\u201d Monday night. \u201cIf they don\u2019t like what I\u2019m saying or what I\u2019m doing, they have the right to fire me. I have no animus at all toward CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santorum, who had been at CNN since 2017, was heavily criticized after telling a Young America\u2019s Foundation event last month that the Founding Fathers \u201cbirthed a nation from nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, there was nothing here,\u201d Santorum said at the time. \u201cI mean, yes, we have Native Americans, but candidly, there isn\u2019t much Native American culture in American culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santorum claimed that he misspoke and meant to refer to the American founding rather than \u201cAmerican culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a little disappointing because \u2026 what I said was not at all disparaging toward Native Americans,\u201d he told host Sean Hannity. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was giving a talk to a group of young people, talking about the founding principles of religious liberty and how important it was to the immigrants who came here to found this country, and that that was an important value that was imbued in our Constitution,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Santorum added that while he was grateful to CNN for \u201cholding on [to me for] four-and-a-half years in spite of some of the things I said defending [former] President [Donald] Trump\u201d, he thought the network ultimately caved to \u201ccancel culture\u201d by firing him. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it does show that the left is intolerant,\u201d Santorum said. \u201cThey\u2019re worried, I\u2019m sure, that their viewership, which is obviously very left, [that] they were going to pay a price. And the intolerance of the left is really the issue here, and the cancel culture that is flowing from it. And I hear from a lot of liberals \u2014 in fact many CNN contributors who talked to me afterwards \u2014 who were very, very concerned about the cancel culture that\u2019s now hitting them at CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santorum also insisted that he \u201ctold the truth\u201d in his remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re entitled to your opinion, but you\u2019re not entitled to the facts,\u201d he said, \u201cand that\u2019s where I think we\u2019ve gotten off-kilter here a little bit in America.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
