The Movie:\u00a0<\/strong>The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em><\/p>\n

The Pitch:\u00a0<\/strong>Hot-shot Southern lawyer Keanu Reeves gets recruited to join a big New York City law firm, but there\u2019s a catch: his new boss, Al Pacino, is\u00a0the devil<\/em>!!!!!!!!!!<\/p>\n

Why It\u2019s Essential Quarantine Viewing:\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s okay to have fun with dumb movies. And\u00a0The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em> is pretty damn dumb. Keanu Reeves uses a questionable Southern accent, Al Pacino chews the scenery so hard he\u2019s in danger of breaking some teeth, and a pre-fame Charlize Theron is stuck in a mini\u00a0Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em> remake, and all of this happ<\/a>ens in the\u00a0same movie<\/em>. Clocking-in at an overwhelming\u00a0144 minutes, and featuring scenes where Pacino dips his fingers in holy water and causes the water to boil<\/em>,\u00a0The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em> is a blend of legal drama and horror melodrama, and it\u2019s a hoot.<\/p>\n

Before Keanu Reeves<\/strong> did\u00a0The Matrix<\/em>, he starred in\u00a0The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Taylor Hackford<\/strong>\u2018s epic-length horror drama about a lawyer in danger of losing his soul. Reeves is a hot-shot young attorney from\u00a0Gainesville, Florida (even though his accent suggests he\u2019s from somewhere in Alabama), who is willing to emotionally destroy a sexual assault victim on the witness stand in order to win a case. Reeves\u2019 lapse of moral compass gets him noticed by a huge New York City law firm, and as we all know, law firms, in general<\/a>, are evil, but\u00a0New York City<\/em> law firms are the evilest<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Soon, Reeves meets his new boss, John Milton, played by Al Pacino<\/strong>. Even though it\u2019s abundantly clear that Milton is the devil incarnate, Reeves\u2019 character remains oblivious and is easily wooed by the prospect of money and power. The same can\u2019t be said of Reeves\u2019 sweet-natured wife, played by\u00a0Charlize Theron<\/strong>, who does much better with her accent. Theron\u2019s character notices almost immediately that something is up with not just Milton but also everyone in Milton\u2019s circle, including some of her new neighbors. She begins to have a complete breakdown, but Reeves is once again oblivious. Not only is he focused on his work, he\u2019s also focused on one of his new coworkers, a sexy lawyer played by\u00a0Connie Nielsen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Full of sex, violence, and big special effects,\u00a0The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em> feels like the type of movie that would never get made today, at least not by a big Hollywood studio for\u00a0$57 million. Yet in 1997, the movie was a hit, raking in\u00a0$153 million. Imagine that happening today. You can\u2019t.<\/p>\n

As much as I love Reeves, it\u2019s fair to say he\u2019s not very good in this movie. I don\u2019t mean to keep harping on his accent, but it\u2019s\u00a0so<\/em> distractingly bad (even worse than his infamous\u00a0Dracula<\/em> accent) that it almost completely sinks his performance. That\u2019s okay, though, because the real draw here is Pacino.\u00a0The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em> arrived in the midst of Pacino\u2019s shouty phase. After the actor scored an Oscar for his loud performance in\u00a0Scent of a Woman<\/em>, Pacino seemed to believe that every performance going forward required him to\u00a0YELL AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS<\/em>. While some may take issue with that, it works perfectly here. Pacino\u2019s Satanic lawyer is all about excess \u2013 he loves to talk about\u00a0fucking<\/em>, and he loves to laugh his ass off at stuff that really isn\u2019t funny. And when someone dares challenge him, he sends demonic homeless people to beat that person to death.<\/p>\n

It all culminates in a big, loud, special effects-heavy conclusion that feels like a huge cheat. But by then it\u2019s okay, you\u2019ve already had your fun with\u00a0The Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/em>. And it\u2019s had its fun with you.<\/p>\n
