President James Bullard warned Monday that investors should be careful when investing in cryptocurrencies, and dismissed most of them as \u201cworthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/st-louis-fed-president-james-bullard-yahoo-finance-transcript-may-2021-175539619.html\" class=\"icon none\">In an interview with Yahoo Finance<\/a>, Bullard admitted that digital currencies that are able to \u201cfacilitate transactions that are difficult to make in conventional currencies\u201d do have a place alongside fiat currencies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       However: \u201cWe have a couple of thousand of these around, most of them are worthless,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bullard encouraged investors to be aware of the inherent risks in cryptocurrency investing \u2014 particularly concerning price volatility \u2014 and to \u201cbe careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think for the most part, people like going into this with eyes wide open, they\u2019re certainly not blind to the idea that this is a volatile area,\u201d he told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Bullard said there are \u201clots of interesting things going on in this space,\u201d and added that \u201cof course the Fed is also looking at a Fed coin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot going on, watching this very carefully,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Separately Monday, Fed Gov. Lael Brainard said the central bank is keeping a close eye on China\u2019s efforts to develop a digital currency, and said it\u2019s critical that the Fed be \u201cat the table\u201d\u00a0in any development of standards for central-bank digital currencies.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank will ramp up its exploration of a digital dollar this summer, stressing it would not be a replacement for cash.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto prices have been on a wild ride this year, but have fallen sharply over the past month. After tumbling over the weekend, the prices of bitcoin<br \/>\n        BTCUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/31322028\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-2.89%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and dogecoin<br \/>\n        DOGEUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/226077044\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-4.85%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rallied early Monday, though pulled back slightly by Monday night.
