It\u2019s been eight long years since\u00a0J.J. Abrams<\/strong>\u00a0and video game<\/a> producer\u00a0Gabe Newell<\/strong>\u00a0brought together\u00a0their Bad Robot and Valve companies to collaborate\u00a0on feature film adaptations of Valve\u2019s wildly popular video game franchises\u00a0Portal<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Half-Life<\/em><\/strong>. And it\u2019s been five years since we\u2019ve heard an update on either film. But Abrams finally has an update on the long-awaited\u00a0Portal<\/em>\u00a0movie, which the producer and filmmaker says is back on track.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0IGN<\/a>, Abrams confirmed the movie based on Valve\u2019s\u00a0Portal<\/em> video game is still in the works, with a script<\/a> currently being written. Abrams was naturally coy on the subject, but said that\u00a0Warner Bros. is excited about the direction the movie is going in, and that it \u201cfeels like that thing\u2019s finally on the rails.\u201d
\nThe Portal<\/em> movie will adapt the first-person puzzle game first published in 2007, which was hailed as one of the most original games of its generation (it went on to spawn a spin-off for\u00a0Xbox Live Arcade and an equally beloved sequel). In the original game, the player navigates a series<\/a> of \u201ctest chambers\u201d in a mysterious facility, using a portal gun to create pathways through space. The obstacles get increasingly complex to the point of being deadly, finally revealed to be the work of an A.I. called GLaDOS, which had been guiding the player before betraying them. In 2011\u2019s\u00a0Portal 2<\/em>, the story and scope expanded to introduce more complex backstories and characters. The games have been praised for the challenging puzzle elements, but more so for their dark humor and sharp writing.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Portal<\/em> movie was first revealed back in 2013, when Abrams and Newell announced their collaboration on stage at the DICE Summit. But apart from a short film from 10 Cloverfield Lane<\/em> director and friend of the site\u00a0Dan Trachtenberg<\/strong>,\u00a0Portal: No Escape<\/em>, there hasn\u2019t been much news<\/a> or even speculation about what a\u00a0Portal<\/em> movie would look or feel like. But with video game movies enjoying a new resurgence in Hollywood, Bad Robot and Valve might be feeling the pressure to get things rolling on their\u00a0Portal<\/em> and\u00a0Half Life<\/em> movies.<\/p>\n
