Mark York, an actor and inventor famed for playing Billy Merchant on \u201cThe Office\u201d opposite Steve Carell, has died<\/a>. He was 55.<\/p>\n

The actor passed away in the \u201cearly morning of May 19th at Miami Valley Hospital following a brief and unexpected illness,\u201d according to an obituary posted by Kreitzer Funeral Home<\/a>, which is located near his hometown of Arcanum, Ohio, where he grew up. <\/p>\n

The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n

York played Merchant \u2014 properties manager of the Scranton office park where Dunder Mifflin is located \u2014 during Seasons 2 through 5 of NBC\u2019s cult classic sitcom. His recurring character was, like York, a paraplegic, and experienced many an awkward encounter with Carell\u2019s bumbling branch manager Michael Scott.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Office\u201d actor Rainn Wilson, 55, was the first co-star to pay public homage<\/a>: \u201cHe was a terrific human, a positive force and a dynamic actor. You will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

York had been paraplegic since 1988, when he suffered \u201can almost fatal, life-changing auto accident,\u201d according to the bio on his personal website<\/a>. That near-death experience led him back to school \u2014 and into acting.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had such an outgoing, uplifting, positive attitude and personality. He always tried to look at what he could accomplish and do, not what he couldn\u2019t do,\u201d his obit reads. \u201cHe had experienced many travel<\/a> opportunities and many dreams for the future. In the past several years, he had been working as an inventor, and had obtained two patents for his inventions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Arcanum High School alum was a triple-major graduate of Anderson University in nearby Indiana, where he had done some print modeling before he was encouraged by several friends to head west to pursuing acting in California.<\/p>\n

Credited as Marcus A. York on his IMDb profile<\/a>, the actor also guest starred on \u201cCSI: New York\u201d and \u201c8 Simple Rules\u201d with John Ritter\u00a0and app<\/a>eared in uncredited roles in Steven Spielberg\u2019s\u00a02001 film \u201cA.I.: Artificial Intelligence\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0the 1997 indie \u201cGoing All the Way\u201d opposite Ben Affleck.<\/p>\n

He was \u201can avid sports fan, ALL sports\u201d \u2014 but especially liked the Cincinnati Reds, Ohio State football and Kentucky Wildcats basketball. <\/p>\n

\u201cMark also loved coming home to his mom\u2019s house and playing numerous table game<\/a>s with her and his brother Brian for hours on end,\u201d according to the family statement. \u201cHe was a competitive spirit\u00a0that kept them laughing throughout their time together. He will be deeply missed by all the lives he has touched.\u201d<\/p>\n

York is survived by his brother Brian York, mother Becky York, father Glenn York, as well as \u201cnumerous aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
