Jerrod Carmichael<\/strong> is going to be in a\u00a0Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong> movie. That\u2019s a sentence you don\u2019t read everyday, nor one you\u2019d likely expect to read, if you know of Carmichael for his work as a stand-up comedia<\/a>n and comedy actor, and if you know of Lanthimos\u2019 particularly cruel style of filmmaking seen in such movies<\/a> as\u00a0The Favourite<\/em> and\u00a0The Lobster<\/em>. But Carmichael has been cast in Lanthimos\u2019 adaptation of\u00a0Poor Things<\/em><\/strong>, which already stars acting heavyweights such as Emma Stone<\/strong>, Willem Dafoe<\/strong>, and Mark Ruffalo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/a> reports that Carmichael has joined the cast of\u00a0Poor Things<\/em>, the upcoming Victorian-set film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos starring Emma Stone as \u201ca\u00a0young woman named Belle Baxter who is brought back to life by an eccentric and brilliant scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe).\u201d
\nBased on Alasdair Grey\u2019s novel of the same name,\u00a0Poor Things<\/em> is\u00a0described as a story with a \u201cFrankenstein-esque bent\u201d with a focus on \u201clove, discovery and scientific daring.\u201d Ruffalo stars as\u00a0Duncan Wedderburn, while Ramy Youssef (Hulu\u2019s\u00a0Ramy<\/em>) is Max McCandless. It\u2019s not reported who Carmichael will be playing.<\/p>\n

Carmichael might seem like a slightly left-field choice for a Lanthimos film, which are general<\/a>ly very dark, though with a vein of dark humor as seen in the Greek director\u2019s 2018\u2019s movie\u00a0The Favourite<\/em>. Carmichael\u2019s casting might suggest a similarly dark comedic tone in\u00a0Poor Things<\/em>.\u00a0Youssef also comes from the comedy side, creating and starring in Hulu\u2019s Emmy-nominated comedy series\u00a0Ramy<\/em>, which Carmichael executive produces. But Carmichael has been making a significant shift lately, making his feature directorial debut with the stylish Sundance dark comedy\u00a0On the Count of Three<\/em>, in which he also starred. So perhaps his casting is not as left-field as one would expect.<\/p>\n

Poor Things<\/em> is directed and produced by Lanthimos with a script<\/a> written by his Oscar-nominated\u00a0The Favourite<\/em> collaborator Tony McNamara, who is also behind Hulu\u2019s pretty great\u00a0The Great<\/em>.\u00a0The project is set up at Searchlight Pictures, which also distributed\u00a0The Favourite<\/em>. Production on the project is set to begin this year, with a 2022 release date likely. In addition to starring, Stone is also producing.\u00a0Ed Guiney<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Andrew Lowe<\/strong>\u00a0from Element Pictures, Film4, and Lanthimos will also produce.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the synopsis for the\u00a0Poor<\/em>\u00a0Things<\/em> novel:<\/p>\n

Ostensibly the memoirs of late-19th-century Glasgow physician Archibald McCandless, the narrative follows the bizarre life of oversexed, volatile Bella Baxter, an emancipated woman, and a female Frankenstein. Bella is not her real name; as Victorian Blessington, she drowned herself to escape her abusive husband, but a surgeon removed the brain from the fetus she was carrying and placed it in her skull, resuscitating her. The revived Bella has the mental age of a child. Engaged to marry McCandless, she chloroforms him and runs off with a shady lawyer who takes her on a whirlwind adventure, hopping from Alexandria to Odessa to a Parisian brothel. As her brain matures, Bella develops a social conscience<\/a>, but her rescheduled nuptials to Archie are cut short when she is recognized as Victoria by her lawful husband, Gen. Sir Aubrey Blessington.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
