{"id":259712,"date":"2021-05-26T22:22:13","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T19:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/biden-may-import-materials-for-electric-vehicles-report\/"},"modified":"2021-05-26T22:22:13","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T19:22:13","slug":"biden-may-import-materials-for-electric-vehicles-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/biden-may-import-materials-for-electric-vehicles-report\/","title":{"rendered":"#Biden may import materials for electric vehicles: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Biden may import materials for electric vehicles: report<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Biden administration is considering a plan to import the bulk of the materials needed to build electric vehicles and the batteries that power them instead of mining them domestically \u2014 a nod to environmental groups that make up a key part of the Democratic constituency, according\u00a0to a report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The plan under consideration\u00a0would entail buying the materials from overseas markets and allow US manufacturers to assemble them into batteries or electric vehicles in an effort to create American jobs but still remain in the good graces of environmental groups, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/biden-looks-abroad-electric-vehicle-metals-blow-us-miners-2021-05-25\/\">Reuters reported<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The plan would allow the US to reduce its dependence on China for the materials, the report said\u200b, but would be a blow to US\u00a0miners. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that hard to dig a hole,\u201d \u200ban administration source told\u00a0Reuters. \u201cWhat\u2019s hard is getting that stuff out and getting it to processing facilities. The US could better leverage our sizeable lithium reserves and manufacturing know-how to expand domestic battery production,\u201d the order said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US Commerce Department is putting together a conference next month to attract more electric vehicle manufacturing to the US as part of the administration\u2019s commitment to boost the domestic electric vehicle market with tax credits in the proposed infrastructure package.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Biden administration\u2019s approach, the US would rely on Canada, Australia and Brazil to produce the majority of the raw materials while\u00a0American businesses would ramp up competition to turn those materials into computer chips and batteries, Reuters reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nailing down the supply chain for these materials href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/CountryProfile\/en\/Country\/USA\/Year\/LTST\/TradeFlow\/Import\/Partner\/by-country\/Product\/25-26_Minerals\"> World Bank<\/a>, the US imports of minerals in 2018 relied mainly on Canada, China, Mexico, Brazil and South America.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>But labor leaders, many of whom support Democratic candidates, said they don\u2019t want their workers left out of a lucrative job market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s let Americans extract these minerals from the earth,\u201d Aaron Butler of United Association Local 469 union, which does work for Rio Tinto Ltd\u2019s proposed\u00a0copper mine project in Arizona and endorsed Biden in the election, told Reuters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are good-paying jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unionized labor skills like electrical and concrete work can help build the processing plants for the minerals, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden White House fears that environmentalists and some Democratic lawmakers would Rep.\u00a0 Betty McCollum (D-Minn), who has introduced legislation that would block a copper mine on federal lands in Minnesota, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>But critics of the plan argue that the administration will be unable to fully realize the market for electric vehicles without help from US mines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese \u2018not-in-my-backyard\u2019 extremists have made clear they want to lock up our land and prevent the mining of minerals,\u201d Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said at a House hearing earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Rich Nolan, the president of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nma.org\/2021\/03\/09\/american-minerals-electric-vehicles\/\">National Mining Association<\/a>, said the administration must view the country\u2019s mines as a partner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. took a positive step in this direction when the U.S. Dept. of Energy recently launched the Division of Minerals Sustainability. But if we want to seriously compete in the global EV market, the U.S. must give mining and the mineral supply chain the attention they deserve. We have the tools to win this race, but only if we make smart policy decisions today to help U.S. manufacturing better compete in the future\u200b,\u201d Nolan said in a statement in March.\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"668\" alt=\"Rep.
