Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is a demanding hotel guest whose requirements would make even the most pampered celebrity blush, according to a new book detailing Democratic Party politics. <\/p>\n

In an excerpt from \u201cBattle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats\u2019 Campaigns to Defeat Trump,\u201d author Edward-Isaac Dovere reports that following Sanders\u2019 surprisingly strong 2016 presidential campaign, the democratic social<\/a>ist\u2019s staffers put together a \u201cSenator Comfort Memo\u201d detailing his specifications for each hotel stay on his travel<\/a>s. The excerpt was first reported by Fox News<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to Dovere, Sanders preferred suites with bathtubs and a king-size bed \u201cwhich had to have a down comforter or another blanket in the closet. He preferred that the extra blanket be dark blue, and made of cotton.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanders, 79, required that his room be kept at 60 degrees even if it meant opening a window in winter or manually overriding the hotel\u2019s climate control system. Dovere recounts one incident on a trip to California when a hotel worker tried and failed to get the room to the required coolness. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, Chloe,\u201d Dovere writes an \u201cannoyed\u201d Sanders told the employee. \u201cYou don\u2019t want me to sleep tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n

The book adds that Sanders would preserve his man-of-the-people bona fides by turning down room upgrades, occasionally swapp<\/a>ing with aides and telling them, \u201cif there\u2019s a bomb in there, it\u2019s yours tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201ccomfort memo\u201d also reportedly required that Sanders\u2019 hotel rooms be stocked with green tea with honey, Gatorade and assorted nuts (no word about brown M&Ms). <\/p>\n

The book also delves into Sanders\u2019 affection for private jets, which has previously been noted with bitterness by staffers for Hillary Clinton\u2019s failed 2016 presidential campaign. <\/p>\n

According to Dovere, while Sanders was initially sheepish about using a chartered campaign plane, he got a \u201ckick out of not worrying about being late for a flight that couldn\u2019t take off without him.\u201d In fact, Sanders developed such a taste for flying private that his staff crafted a memo detailing the minimum requirements for any plane trip Sanders took beyond his regular flights to and from his home state of Vermont. (\u201cCouldn\u2019t be too cramped. Couldn\u2019t get too bumpy,\u201d according to Dovere.)<\/p>\n

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Sanders even used a private plane to travel to and from Iowa during breaks in then-President Donald Trump\u2019s first impeachment trial. <\/p>\n

Sanders\u2019 office did not immediately return requests for comment.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
