Hey, Joey \u2014 how you<\/em> doin\u2019?<\/p>\n

In a harrowing incident that was kept hush-hush for decades, a 1996 episode of \u201cFriends\u201d took a turn when star Matt LeBlanc took a \u201ccringe-worthy\u201d fall while filming \u2014 and paramedics had to rush him to the hospital in excruciating pain.<\/p>\n

During the much-hyped \u201cFriends: The Reunion\u201d special \u2014 which hit HBO Max<\/a> Thursday \u2014 series<\/a> creator David Crane revealed that production ground to a halt on the Sept. 26, 1996, episode \u201cThe One Where Nobody\u2019s Ready\u201d when LeBlanc \u2014 as lovable lunkhead Joey Tribbiani \u2014 suffered his show-stopping injury.<\/p>\n

In one scene, roommates Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Joey fight over a chair, and, during their war of (nit)wits, Joey runs and jumps onto it to claim it for himself. That\u2019s when things went painfully awry. <\/p>\n

\u201cI somehow trip<\/a>ped \u2014 and my shoulder came out of the socket,\u201d LeBlanc, 53, explained in the special.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, they were shooting a \u201cbottle episode,\u201d meaning one that is set entirely in one location \u2014 in this case, Monica and Rachel\u2019s apartment \u2014 and required all of the main stars at all times.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt happ<\/a>ened to be the one episode where it was just the six of them, all in it \u2014 so we couldn\u2019t film other scenes,\u201d said Crane of the episode, which chronicles Ross\u2019 increasing anxiety as the gang takes too long to get ready for an important function at his museum later that evening. It was supposed to be an \u201ceasy,\u201d budget-saving one since it all took place in one location and required no guest stars. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo what started out to be the simplest \u2018Friends\u2019 episode ended up taking the longest amount of time to shoot,\u201d Crane added in the behind-the-scenes special. <\/p>\n

Because LeBlanc\u2019s injury would take time to heal, the creators wound up writing LeBlanc\u2019s newly present arm-sling into the show; in later episodes, kid-at-heart Joey\u2019s onscreen reason for the injury was that he had a mishap while jumping on his bed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It turns out the cast may have jinxed LeBlanc, too. It was revealed in the special that they used to huddle before filming each episode \u2014 but mysteriously they neglected to do so before filming that one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maybe they were on a break. <\/p>\n

Because of the unfortunate incident, that episode may not be high on LeBlanc\u2019s list of favorites. But former soccer pro David Beckham \u2014 who is a huge \u201cFriends\u201d fan and was a guest star on the special \u2014 said it is his fave episode from the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of those episodes that when I\u2019m away [from my family] or feeling a little bit low, I put it on,\u201d Beckham, 46, shared onscreen. \u201cAnd it makes you smile almost to the point of crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

BTW: Getting his shoulder ripped out of its socket wasn\u2019t LeBlanc\u2019s only gnarly injury during his early time with \u201cFriends.\u201d He also recounts going drinking with a friend the night before\u00a0his big callback audition.<\/p>\n

LeBlanc blacked out, fell face first into the toilet and hit his nose, causing \u201ca huge chunk of meat to come off my nose,\u201d he said. \u201c[I thought], \u2018Oh my god, i have to go in for the big callback\u2019 and it\u2019s a big ugly scab on my nose, and [co-creator] Marta Kauffman said \u2018What happened to your face?\u2019 I told the truth \u2014 and got the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reunion featured LeBlanc, Perry, 51; Jennifer Aniston, 52, Courteney Cox, 56, Lisa Kudrow, 57, and David Schwimmer, 54, who dished about life on- and off-set of the legendary NBC sitcom, which aired from 1994 to 2004. Among the other tidbits revealed was a lingering real-life lust between Aniston and Schwimmer, who played lovebirds Rachel and Ross. <\/p>\n

\u201cFriends: The Reunion\u201d is now streaming on HBO Max<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>\n <\/div>\n
