If the thumb crosses beyond the far edge of the palm, the patient may be hiding a hidden aneurysm \u2014 an abnormal bulge that occurs in the wall of the major blood vessel that carries blood from the heart throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to stretch the thumb in that way is an indication that a patient\u2019s long bones are excessive and their joints are lax \u2014 possible signs of connective tissue disease throughout the body, including the aorta, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.yale.edu\/2021\/05\/25\/all-favor-test-aortic-aneurysms-raise-your-hand#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20biggest%20problem%20in%20aneurysm,at%20Yale%20New%20Haven%20Hospital.\">the researchers said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, drawing on results from 305 patients undergoing heart surgery, were published last week in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajconline.org\/article\/S0002-9149(21)00311-8\/fulltext#%20\">the American Journal of Cardiology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The patients were in treatment for disorders including ascending aneurysm, valve repair and coronary artery bypass grafting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-nypost-medium-post\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"322\" height=\"429\" alt=\"Thumb to palm test\" class=\"wp-image-18358776 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/yale-thumb-test.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/yale-thumb-test.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/yale-thumb-test.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/yale-thumb-test.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=322 322w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/yale-thumb-test.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=644 644w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 322px\"\/><figcaption>Aortic aneurysms were the cause of 9,923 deaths in 2018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The study found that the majority of aneurysm patients do not manifest a positive thumb-palm sign \u2014 but that patients who do have a positive sign have \u201ca very high likelihood of harboring an ascending aneurysm.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the researchers also stressed that it also doesn\u2019t mean everyone who tests positive is an aneurysm carrier \u2014 and that aneurysms take decades to progress to the point of rupture, so a positive test isn\u2019t a cause for panic.<\/p>\n<p>A negative thumb test does not exclude an aneurysm, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cspreading knowledge of this test may well identify silent aneurysm carriers and save lives,\u201d said Dr. John A. Elefteriades, the William W.L. Glenn Professor of Surgery at Yale and emeritus director of the Aortic Institute at Yale New Haven Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Elefteriades said he and his colleagues have included the thumb-palm test in lectures to medical students and used the test on those who might be at risk of carrying an aneurysm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the test\u2019s accuracy had not previously been evaluated in a clinical setting, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>Aortic aneurysms are hard to detect in advance, according to Elefteriades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest problem in aneurysm disease is recognizing affected individuals within the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> population before the aneurysm ruptures,\u201d the doctor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aortic aneurysms were the cause of 9,923 deaths in 2018, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heartdisease\/aortic_aneurysm.htm\">according to the CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That year, about 58 percent of deaths due to aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection were among men.<\/p>\n<p>A history of smoking accounts for about 75 percent of all abdominal aortic aneurysms \u2014 and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that men between 65 and 75 years old who have ever smoked should get an ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms, even without symptoms.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
