Beloved children\u2019s book illustrator Lois Ehlert died of natural causes Tuesday in Milwaukee, her publisher Simon & Schuster said. She was 86.<\/p>\n

The Wisconsin native was best known for her brightly colored cut-and-paste illustrations in the 1989 book \u201cChicka Chicka Boom Boom.\u201d The classic book tells the tale of a group of multi-hued capital letters who attempt to congregate at the top of a coconut tree, creating a question of space. \u201cChicka chicka boom boom! Will there be enough room?\u201d the book\u2019s text repeatedly questions.<\/p>\n

The anthropomorphized alphabet proceeds to stub toes, be patched up, become out of breath, get all tangled up and lose a tooth \u2014 only for the letter A to get out of bed late at night and attempt to climb the tree once more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The best-selling book was a smash hit and continues to be regarded as a preschool staple, having sold more than 12 million copies, NPR reported<\/a>. Legendary musician Ray Charles narrated an audiobook adaptation of it and it inspired everything from an eponymous 1992 album to a 1995 CD-ROM game<\/a>, a 1999 animated short film and a 2004 sequel (\u201cChicka, Chicka, 1, 2, 3\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n

While \u201cChicka\u201d was her best-known work, it was Ehlert\u2019s book \u201cColor Zoo\u201d that won her the Caldecott Honor in 1990.<\/p>\n

Before her career in children\u2019s books, which she began in her 50s, she obtained a degree from Milwaukee\u2019s Layton School of Art and worked in graphic design. In addition to \u201cColor Zoo\u201d and \u201cChicka Chicka,\u201d she also illustrated 1987\u2019s \u201cGrowing Vegetable Soup,\u201d 1998\u2019s \u201cPlanting a Rainbow,\u201d 1989\u2019s \u201cEating the Alphabet\u201d and 2001\u2019s \u201cWaiting for Wings.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ehlert\u2019s passing comes after \u201cThe Very Hungry Caterpillar\u201d author Eric Carle died Sunday at 91.<\/p>\n
