Jerome Hellman, the Oscar-winning producer of the groundbreaking 1969 film \u201cMidnight Cowboy,\u201d has died. He was 92.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the course of his career, Hellman also worked on 1964\u2019s \u201cThe World of Henry Orient,\u201d 1966\u2019s \u201cA Fine Madness,\u201d 1975\u2019s \u201cThe Day of the Locust\u201d and 1986\u2019s \u201cThe Mosquito Coast,\u201d all in collaboration with a variety of notable directors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also notable was his work as a producer for the 1978 Vietnam War film \u201cComing Home,\u201d which landed an Academy Award for Best Screenplay, as well as Best Actress and Actor Oscars for cast members Jane Fonda and \u201cMidnight Cowboy\u201d star Jon Voight. <\/p>\n

The X-rated \u201cMidnight Cowboy\u201d is today considered representative of a turning point in Hollywood for its depiction of homosexuality and prostitution. Despite being controversially explicit, the movie ended up taking home Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture, a fate Hellman has famously admitted to doubt would ever happ<\/a>en.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so sure we weren\u2019t going to win, I didn\u2019t even prepare a speech,\u201d Hellman told<\/a> the Los Angeles Times in 2005. \u201cI probably only said 10 words. It must\u2019ve been the shortest speech in the history of the Oscars. I didn\u2019t thank [director] John [Schlesinger] or the actors or my mother or father.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film remains the only X-rated movie in history to take home a Best Picture Oscar. (Its rating has since been downgraded to a mere R.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hellman is credited with advocating for Dustin Hoffman to play the greasy sidekick character of Ratso Rizzo in the flick. Soon after seeing him in the 1966 off-Broadway play \u201cEh?\u201d Hellman returned with Schlesinger. \u201cThey went backstage and immedia<\/a>tely offered him \u2018Midnight Cowboy,\u2019 \u201d Schlesinger\u2019s partner of 37 years, Michael Childers, told The Post in 2019.<\/p>\n

In 1967, \u201cThe Graduate\u201d opened, rocketing Hoffman to such celebrity heights that \u201cMidnight Cowboy\u201d had to hire bodyguards to keep \u201chundreds of teenage girls\u201d from breaking into his trailer, Childers said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before going into producing and directing, Hellman worked as a New York talent agent. Prior to the silver screen, he also worked on live TV dramas.<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Empleton Hellman, a daughter and a son, Variety reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
