from data confirming an economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, despite inflation running at its highest annual rate in about 13 years.<\/p>\n<p> U.S. financial markets will be closed on Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_stock_benchmarks_trading\"><\/span>How are stock benchmarks trading?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n       The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 64.81 points higher to end at 34,529.45, a gain of 0.2%.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500 index advanced 3.23 points, or 0.1%, at 4,204.11.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite Index<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.09%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 12.46 points, or 0.1%, to reach 13,748.74.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Thursday, the Dow<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" The small-cap Russell 2000 index<br \/>\n        RUT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598147\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.18%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       closed up 1.1%, or 23.80 points, to reach 2,273.07. <\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Weekly_and_monthly_statistics\"><\/span>Weekly and monthly statistics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Dow booked a weekly gain of 0.9% for a rise of 1.9% in May, marking its fourth monthly gain in a row. <\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 was up 1.2% on the week for a May gain of 0.6%, also marking its fourth straight monthly advance. <\/p>\n<p>The Nasdaq had a weekly gain of 2.1%, but a 1.5% decline in the month to date. <\/p>\n<p>The Russell 2000 saw a weekly return of 2.4% and a monthly gain of  0.1%, which marks its eighth straight monthly gain and its longest such winning streak since 1995. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_driving_equity_trading\"><\/span>What\u2019s driving equity trading? <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>U.S. equity market investors closed out May with major indexes near all-time highs, after Wall Street sorted through the latest consumer spending, income and inflation data, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> on the fading pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S.\u2019s PCE inflation rate <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roached its highest level in nearly 13 years at 3.6%, higher than the 2.9% that economists\u2019 surveyed by Dow Jones had forecast. That marks the highest level since 2008. On a month-over-month basis, PCE inflation rose 0.6% in April, while the core rate up rose 0.7%. <\/p>\n<p>The core price index, which s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s out volatile food and fuel prices, rose 3.1% in the year through April \u2014 marking the fastest pace since 1992.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>That reading on inflation comes as U.S. consumer incomes dropped 13.1% in April after government stimulus checks for Americans ended, but consumer spending climbed 0.5% last month, matching consensus estimates.  <\/p>\n<p>In other data, the<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ism-chicago.org\/insidepages\/reportsonbusiness\/\" class=\"icon none\"> Chicago Business Barometer,\u00a0<\/a>also known as the Chicago PMI, jumped to 75.2 in May from 72.1, which was the highest since December 1983.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is watching to see if this inflation is indeed transitory,\u201d said Mona Mahajan, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz Global Investors, in an interview Friday. It \u201cmight be stickier than markets think,\u201d she said, citing supply shortages in areas like semiconductors, labor shortages, higher commodity prices, as well as housing and financial markets that have run \u201cpretty hot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mahajan is looking to the Federal Reserve\u2019s meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this summer for potential talk about how it might begin tapering its asset purchases. \u201cIf there is a change in stance or policy, I think we might get it then,\u201d she said.  <\/p>\n<p>Tapering could prompt a rise in 10-year Treasury yields, potentially putting pressure on \u201canything that\u2019s considered longer duration,\u201d including <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> and discretionary stocks, according to Mahajan. \u201cSimilarly, the bond-proxy sectors like utilities tend to underperform in that environment, as well,\u201d she added, saying  at some point the Fed will have to remove some of its \u201ccrisis-level accommodation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jackson Hole Economic Symposium will be held in person from August 26-28, according to a report Friday from U.S. economists at Bank of America. Next Friday\u2019s May employment report will be \u201ca critical data point for the Fed in deciding the path of monetary policy, especially given the surge in inflation and inflation expectations,\u201d they said in the BofA Global Research report.<\/p>\n<p>The May employment report, due next Friday,  \u201clooms large\u201d after a disappointing nonfarm payrolls print in April, the economists said. Investors will be looking to see whether the April employment report was a \u201cfluke\u201d or \u201cemployment activity has stalled due to the mismatch between supply and demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, inflation worries appear to be creeping into the psyche of American consumers. A final reading of the consumer-sentiment index issued Friday edged up to 82.9 from an initial 82.8, the University of Michigan said Friday, down from a 13-month high of 88.3 in April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read<\/strong>: \u2018I am worried about day-to-day people,\u2019 when it comes to rising inflation, warns investment manager<\/p>\n<p>That said, economists expect sentiment to improve over the next few months as the recovery from COVID continues to get better. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking ahead, attitudes will improve over the summer as wider vaccine eligibility, lifted activity restrictions, and an accelerating labor market recovery lifts sentiment back towards pre-pandemic levels,\u201d wrote economists Mahir Rasheed and Greg Daco at Oxford Economics in a research note.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Joe Biden\u2019s administration unveiled its $6 trillion budget Friday, projecting a deficit of $1.8 trillion for the next fiscal year as the White House pushes for big spending on things like infrastructure and education. While the projected deficit is high by recent historical standards, it\u2019s a sharp drop from the $3.1 trillion recorded last year under former President Donald Trump, MarketWatch reported.<\/p>\n<p>Read: Biden\u2019s budget would run $1.8 trillion deficit next year \u2014 and trillion-dollar-plus shortfalls through this decade<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailing to make these investments at a time of such low interest costs would be a historic missed opportunity that would leave future generations worse off,\u201d acting Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>On the coronavirus front, there is growing optimism in the U.S., where COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations have fallen fast since the vaccine program kicked into high gear. Daily deaths are at their lowest level since last summer, while cases are down 35% from two weeks ago,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/us\/covid-cases.html?name=styln-coronavirus-live&amp;region=TOP_BANNER&amp;block=storyline_menu_recirc&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=LegacyCollection&amp;variant=1_Show&amp;is_new=false\" class=\"icon none\">\u00a0according to a New York Times tracker.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the near term, I think the path of least resistance is higher for the markets,\u201d said Jeff Schulze, an investment strategist at ClearBridge Investments, in an interview Friday. But \u201conce you get closer to Jackson Hole\u201d and the reality that the Fed may start to tighten its policy, \u201cit\u2019s going to be a good excuse for investors to take some cash off the table after a very strong run.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_companies_are_in_focus\"><\/span>Which companies are in focus?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Shares of Dow component <strong>Salesforce Inc<\/strong>.<br \/>\n        CRM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200515854\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+5.43%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       closed 5.4% higher after the enterprise software company reported better-than-expected first-quarter results late Thursday. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>HP Inc.<\/strong>\u2018s stock<br \/>\n        HPQ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203461582\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-8.94%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 8.9% after the company reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      \u201cMeme\u201d stocks have been in focus lately, with shares of <strong>AMC Entertainment<\/strong><br \/>\n        AMC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200235402\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.51%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       surging more 119% so far this week and those for video<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> retailer <strong>GameStop Corp.<\/strong><br \/>\n        GME,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203755179\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-12.64%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were up by about 44% over the period.
