Whether it\u2019s difficulty getting to sleep, waking up in the middle of the night or having trouble going back to sleep once you\u2019re awake, getting enough sleep is a luxury many people don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>A 2015 paper cited estimates that 65%\u2013about two out of three\u2013of older adults\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4347465\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report at least one sleep-related problem.<\/a>\u00a0They include insomnia, nocturnal urination, sleep apnea and other conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Read: Can lack of sleep lead to dementia?<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>But it\u2019s not benign; the same study reported that roughly seven of eight older adults \u201cwho report sleep disturbances report at least one other major mental\/psychological disorder, particularly depression, heart disease, pain, and memory problems.\u201d The connection between chronic sleep problems and dementia is well established. More than 30% of older individuals who experience insomnia have a psychological condition such as depression and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>Read: This is the most common fear among retirees<\/p>\n<p>Of course, underlying medical conditions can cause problems sleeping, too, and one in four Americans between 65 and 84 have been diagnosed with\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/aging-and-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">four or more conditions<\/a>. So can taking medications\u2014almost two out of every five adults over 65 take five or more medications. All of these together can combine to prevent older people from getting a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/p>\n<p>What constitutes a good night\u2019s sleep? One of the biggest myths is that people need less sleep when they age. Actually, older people need the same amount of sleep as younger people do\u2014seven to eight hours a night, the National Sleep Foundation recommends.<\/p>\n<p>Check out: Not sure where you want to retire? Our tool can help you narrow it down<\/p>\n<p>But the pattern of sleep changes, says Dr. David Neubauer, a psychiatrist and professor at Johns Hopkins Medicine who has treated patients for over 35 years in the medical center\u2019s sleep clinic. It\u2019s all based on shifts in circadian rhythms, the way our bodies respond to light, which is why our distant ancestors who didn\u2019t have alarm clocks awakened or went to sleep when the light or darkness told them to.<\/p>\n<p>In older adults, the circadian clock advances, Neubauer explains. \u201cPeople as they age tend to become more early birds, being sleepier earlier in the evening and having their sleep turned off earlier in the mornings,\u201d he tells me in an interview. \u201cSomeone who might\u2019ve been able to sleep until 7:00 or 8:00 several decades later in their life may find that they\u2019re waking up at 6:00 or maybe 5:00 in the morning spontaneously and not being able to sleep anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But old habits die hard. \u201cPeople are set in their ways. They\u2019re accustomed to watching particular programs and staying up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and finally going to bed after they figure out what the weather\u2019s going to be for the next day\u2013not that it makes any difference,\u201d Neubauer says.<\/p>\n<p>Read: This should be the first step when looking for a financial adviser<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he suggests, go to bed when you\u2019re tired. \u201cPeople are not going to bed as early as they could fall asleep, which is earlier than it would have been a few decades earlier in their lives,\u201d he tells me. \u201cWhen you feel tired, don\u2019t fight it\u2013just go to sleep, even if it\u2019s earlier than you used to go to sleep. Don\u2019t stay up until 11:00; go to bed at 10:00.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s getting even more difficult these days with the widespread use of notebook computers, tablets and phones, which not only keep people too preoccupied to fall asleep but emit light that disrupts the body\u2019s rhythms. \u201cI strongly encourage people to minimize light exposure,\u201d Neubauer says. \u201cAvoid having all of the electronic screens close to you, avoid that stimulation. Don\u2019t have such bright lights on.\u201d He recommends separating from electronic screens one to two hours before bedtime. Remember when people used to take a good book to bed?<\/p>\n<p>It is a battle between 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> and tens of thousands of years of evolution hard-wired into our brains. \u201cIt goes back way earlier than humans, the circadian system and the sleep\/wake cycle, phylogenetically goes way, way, way, way back,\u201d he says, \u201cIt is burned in to our physiology, that we have all sorts of different processes that are driven by our circadian clock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if your sleep problems are worse or last longer, consult your physician. Twenty-five percent of older males have sleep apnea and it\u2019s an underdiagnosed condition.<\/p>\n<p>But for the rest of us, just as the old saying in stock investing goes \u201cdon\u2019t fight the tape,\u201d when it comes to sleep, don\u2019t fight the circadian clock. Go to bed when you\u2019re tired and get at least seven hours of sleep a night, if you can.<\/p>\n<p>The three pillars of healthy aging are diet, exercise and sleep, Dr. Neubauer says.
