There are modern and retro options: For example, you can choose Windows 10-, Windows 7-, Windows XP-, or Windows 95-style <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"everyone-loves-the-raspberry-pi\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Incredible_Raspberry_Pi\"><\/span>The Incredible Raspberry Pi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What measures 3.5 inches by 2.2 inches by 0.7 inches (85mm by 56mm by 17mm) and has sales in excess of 30 million units? It\u2019s the third best-selling <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> computer behind the PC and the Mac as well as the most successful British computer of all time. It\u2019s the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/\">Raspberry Pi single-board computer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was launched in February of 2012 as a means to an end.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eben_Upton\">Ebon Upton<\/a>, founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, wanted to produce something that would get British schoolkids switched onto computers and coding in much the same way that the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-15969065\">BBC microcomputer<\/a>\u00a0had in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC microcomputer was a collaboration between the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/\">British Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acorn_Computers\">Acorn Computers Limited<\/a>.\u00a0The BBC made educational programs about computers and programming featuring the BBC microcomputer under the title of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/taster\/pilots\/computer-literacy-project\">BBC Computer Literacy Project<\/a>. In fact, Acorn went on to design the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ARM_architecture\">ARM processor<\/a>, the most widely used processor in the world and the heart of the Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n<p>Where the Raspberry Pi would differ from the BBC microcomputer was in price. A BBC model B cost \u00a3399 ($563) in 1981. The price of a Raspberry Pi model B in 2012 was \u00a322 ($31). The cheapest Raspberry Pi model sells for $5 (\u00a34).<\/p>\n<p>The low price and the open, tinker-friendly design of the Raspberry Pi make it perfect for hundreds of applications outside of education. It\u2019s used by hobbyists and industry alike, and it fuels a thriving aftermarket add-on industry.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-choice-of-operating-system\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Choose_Your_Raspberry_Pi_OS\"><\/span>Choose Your Raspberry Pi OS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The official Raspberry Pi operating system is a customized version of Debian Linux called the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/software\/\">Raspberry Pi OS<\/a>. But you\u2019re not stuck with that.\u00a0There are over 20 Linux-based operating systems available for the Raspberry Pi, and plenty of non-Linux operating systems, too. For example, you can use\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/728051&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fdeveloper.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fwindows%2Fiot%2F\">Windows 10 IoT<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haiku-os.org\/\">Haiku<\/a>, or\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.riscosopen.org\/content\">RISC OS Open<\/a>\u00a0on your Raspberry Pi.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you want to have something that looks like macOS or a version of Windows? Windows 10 IoT doesn\u2019t come with a desktop GUI, so you\u2019ll need to find another solution. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twisteros.com\/\">Twister OS<\/a> is the solution that you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Twister OS is a customized version of Raspberry Pi OS with an extensive selection of themes\u2014down to the icons\u2014that offer the general look and feel of various versions of Windows and macOS. Twister OS contains a small utility that lets you hop back and forth between themes very easily.<\/p>\n<p>It will run best on a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/products\/raspberry-pi-4-model-b\/\">Raspberry Pi 4<\/a>, but will be almost as responsive on a Raspberry Pi 3+. Out of curiosity, we tried it on a Raspberry Pi Model B+ and it worked, but at a glacial pace.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing_Twister_OS\"><\/span>Installing Twister OS<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Download the Raspberry Pi version of Twister OS from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twisteros.com\/twisteros.html\">the Twister OS download page<\/a>. Locate the downloaded file and right-click it. Select \u201cOpen With Archive Manager\u201d from the context menu. If that option doesn\u2019t appear, select the \u201cOpen With Other Application\u201d option and select the Archive Manager from there.<\/p>\n<p>In the Archive Manager, right-click on the single file in the archive and select \u201cExtract\u201d from the context menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728070\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/19.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Archive Manager with Twister OS archive file open\" width=\"644\" height=\"439\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be prompted for a location to save the extracted file. Open a terminal window and change directories to the location where you saved the extracted file.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll need to burn the image to an SD card. The extracted image is 10 GB, so you\u2019ll need a card with a minimum of 16 GB, but 32 GB is recommended.<\/p>\n<p>Before you connect your SD card to your computer, use the <code>lsblck<\/code> command to identify the hard drives in your computer.<\/p>\n<pre>lsblck<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728082\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/14.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"280\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Connect your SD card to your computer. We\u2019ll use <code>lsblck<\/code> again. Take a note of the device name of your SD card. It\u2019s vital that you get this right. If you restore the Twister OS image to the wrong device, you\u2019ll overwrite one of your existing hard drives.<\/p>\n<p>The command to burn the image to the SD card is:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo dd bs=4M if=TwisterOSv2-0-0.img of=\/dev\/sdc conv=fdatasync status=progress<\/pre>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot packed into that command. Here\u2019s what the different bits mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>sudo<\/strong>: You need to be a superuser to issue dd commands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>dd<\/strong>: The name of the command that we\u2019re using.<\/li>\n<li><strong>bs=4M<\/strong>: The <code>-bs<\/code> (block size) option defines the size of each chunk that\u2019s read from the input file and copied to the output device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>if=<\/strong>: The <code>-if<\/code> (input file) option is the path and name of the Twister OS image file.<\/li>\n<li><strong>of=<\/strong>: The <code>-of<\/code> (output file) is the critical parameter. This is the device that we\u2019re going to write the image to. In our example, it\u2019s <code>\/dev\/sdc<\/code>. Make sure that you have correctly identified the correct device on your computer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>conv=fdatasync<\/strong>: This ensures that the write buffers are flushed correctly and completely before the creation process is flagged as having finished.<\/li>\n<li><strong>status=progress<\/strong>: This provides some visual feedback that something is happening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728088\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/16.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"75\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be prompted for your password, and then the copying will begin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/17.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"110\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The process can take quite some time. On our modest test machine, it took over 10 minutes. It uses the xfce <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xfce.org\/\">desktop environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Twister Os default desktop\" width=\"644\" height=\"362\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a perfectly functional Linux installation. Opening a terminal and looking inside the \u201c\/etc\/os-release\u201d file reveals that it\u2019s based on the Raspberry Pi Os (formerly known as Raspbian), which in turn is derived from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.debian.org\/releases\/buster\/\">Debian Linux Buster<\/a> release.<\/p>\n<pre>cat \/etc\/os-release<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/6.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"330\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cThemeTwister\u201d icon is located on the desktop. There are no \u201cAre You Sure\u201d warnings. Also, changing themes will require a reboot. This is the Windows 7 desktop:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/7.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Twister OS Windows 7 theme\" width=\"644\" height=\"362\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It does a pretty good job of evoking the classic Windows 7 look and feel. The start button brings up the familiar system menu. When they\u2019re running, applications appear in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. The color scheme takes you back in time by 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The icons are cheekily repurposed. The Internet Explorer icon opens up the Chromium browser, and the Word and Excel icons open LibreOffice Writer and Calc. The Outlook icon opens the Evolution mail app. The Start button is decorated with a Microsoft-hued Twister OS whirlwind logo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-728110\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/8.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Twister OS Windows 7 theme system menu\" width=\"644\" height=\"548\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Windows 10 dark mode does an equally convincing job. There are many mainstream Linux distributions built on these two well-known Linux mainstays. Your Linux user experience isn\u2019t degraded in any way by using Twister OS.<\/p>\n<p>The different themes might help acclimatize a newcomer to Linux by giving them a familiar interface to work with.
