“#Demi Lovato: ‘The Patriarchy Has Been Holding Me Back’ From Coming Out As Non-Binary

\nDemi Lovato<\/strong> is speaking out about their decision to come out as non-binary \u2014 and how difficult it was considering the pressures faced by young stars and celeb hopefuls in such a difficult industry.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Tell Me You Love Me<\/em> singer spoke out about their non-binary reveal during a conversation with\u00a0Jane Fonda<\/strong> on the latter\u2019s May 28 episode of\u00a0Fire Drill Fridays<\/em>. Demi was candid and very open in the conversation, revealing quite a bit of insight into their thought process these last few months!<\/p>\n

Speaking about being \u201cheld back\u201d before making the difficult decision to come out as non-binary, the pop superstar got real about how they spent \u201cyears\u201d living their life for other people. Speaking virtually with Fonda for the enlightening conversation, Demi said (below):<\/p>\n

\u201cThe patriarchy, they run the industry, they are at the center of everything. When I realized that, I thought, \u2018What are the ways that the patriarchy has been holding me back?\u2019 And for me, it was putting me in a box telling me, \u2018You are a female, this is what you\u2019re supposed to like, this is what you\u2019re supposed to do, don\u2019t dream bigger and don\u2019t speak louder.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Interesting!<\/p>\n

Now, though, the singer is making the most of having learned more about their truth \u2014 and how they can use that truth to help others in turn.<\/p>\n

Demi sounded optimistic AF about the future, telling Fonda that they are hopeful about using learned empathy to connect other people and help them live out their truths, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think all I can encourage people to do is to find more compassion and to have more empathy for others. If you\u2019re having a hard time finding that towards others, go within yourself, find it within yourself so you can find it for others because that\u2019s what will bring us together is, that unity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
