“#NYC hits record cold Memorial Day weekend, but sun coming on Monday<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Mother Nature can be cold.<\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s chilly, rainy, unofficial start to summer in the city was a wash for everyone from Manhattan tourists to Coney Island shopkeepers \u2014 with Saturday\u2019s high of just 51 tying a record set back in 1884 \u2014 but things should warm up again starting Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like winter weather in the middle of spring,\u201d said Victoria Gonzalez, 32, of Orlando, Fla., in Manhattan on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez told The Post she came to the city with her parents for her birthday weekend and \u201cwas personally expecting to go to a rooftop bars because I love going to rooftop bars, especially to celebrate with a drink.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t able to,\u201d Gonzalez lamented.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s city temps were expected to remain in 50s \u2014 threatening to actually break the record low for the day, 55, also set in 1884, said Accuweather meteorologist Alan Reppert.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks like it\u2019s going to at least come close,\u201d he told The Post on Sunday afternoon, referring to the potential history-making mercury dip.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re getting a lot of air right now out of Canada,\u201d the weather expert said, adding that the temperature has been uncharacteristically low because of the clouds, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings should get better,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

On Memorial Day Monday, \u201cThere might be a shower in the early morning, but temperatures are going to rise to around 70 degrees,\u201d Reppert said. \u201cThere will be some sun in the afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then \u201cwe\u2019re looking at temperatures continuing to climb for the week,\u201d with highs in the upper 70s and 80s for the weekend, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks like by the middle, end of next week, things should be much closer to average than what we\u2019ve seen this weekend,\u201d the meteorologist said.<\/p>\n

Still, there will be some rain, particularly around Wednesday and possibly through Friday, Reppert said.<\/p>\n

Store owners in Coney Island, Brooklyn, said they are banking on next weekend to help make up for some of their losses over the holiday.<\/p>\n

Many shop owners on the boardwalk either closed early or shut down completely Sunday to perform more productive tasks such as inventory, rather than keep their doors open to absolutely no customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis weekend, yeah, It\u2019s bad!\u201d said Peter Agrapides Jr., 45, who owns Pete\u2019s Clam Stop on the boardwalk.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday, we closed at 7 p.m.,\u201d he said Sunday. \u201cOn a Saturday during this weekend, we go 11, 12 at night usually. Today we\u2019re completely closed. It\u2019s not worth what we made yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

But \u201cdon\u2019t feel too bad for us too much,\u201d Agrapides said. \u201cWe had a great weekend last weekend! I had to call the clam guy for two extra deliveries on the same day. First time in a long time I ran out of food. Next weekend is going to be big!\u201d<\/p>\n

Maya Miller, the 39-year-old owner of the Brooklyn Beach Shop on the boardwalk, spent part of her Sunday standing on top of a ladder cleaning and stocking shelves.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re using it as an opportunity to tidy up,\u201d she said of the weather. \u201cI\u2019m preparing for a very busy Monday or if not, a very busy weekend next weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

There wasn\u2019t a soul on the beach early Sunday afternoon \u2014 except the lifeguards in their chairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m layered up real good,\u201d said a guard on Stillwell Avenue \u2014 dressed in a waterproof snow suit. <\/p>\n

\u201cI saw one bay swimmer this morning. That\u2019s the only person out there so far. It\u2019s just too cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

The promise of better weather to come did little to warm the hearts of city tourists.<\/p>\n

Brenda Cunha, 23, a Brazilian native who lives in Kentucky, came to Manhattan for three days with a friend.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were going to go to a lot of places outside, so it messed it up,\u201d she said of the cold, rainy weather and pair\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s bad and sad because we wanted to take pretty pictures. We wanted to walk a lot outside and go to Central Park, and we can\u2019t because it\u2019s raining.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the tourist noted the important part of Memorial Day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still need to remember those serving the country who died. It\u2019s a sad day, but the weather goes with the sad part of the holiday,\u2019\u2019 she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
