“#City council firebrand Ruben Diaz Sr. won\u2019t seek reelection<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n City Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr. \u2014 the cowboy hat-wearing\u00a0firebrand <\/span>who gained notoriety with a slew of homophobic statements \u2014 announced Monday he will not seek reelection in 2021, likely bringing his career in Bronx politics to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n

Diaz\u2019s announcement follows his distant third-place finish in the June Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. Jos\u00e9 Serrano in Washington \u2014 a race likely won by fellow City Councilman Ritchie Torres, who is gay.<\/p>\n

\u201cEVERYTHING HAS ITS END,\u201d the former state Senator tweeted in all caps.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter serious analysis, of which I spent in prayer with God, family, ministers and after a political analysis, I have made the decision to follow the example of my two sons,\u201d Diaz Sr., wrote in an email to supporters. \u201cMy biological son Ruben Diaz Jr., and my political son Marcos Crespo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diaz Jr., Borough President of The Bronx, announced in January he was abandoning his 2021 campaign for the Big App<\/a>le\u2019s mayoralty, while Crespo \u2014 the former Assemblyman and head of the powerful Bronx Democratic Party \u2014 stunned longtime observers in February when he announced he was stepping down from both posts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the help of God and my Lord Jesus Christ, I intend to finish out this term as a Member of the City Council which comes to an end on December 31, 2021,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Torres celebrated Diaz\u2019s decision to skip reelection.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot officially declare victory until the results are certified but I can announce that I have retired the politics of hate and fear in the Bronx,\u201d tweeted Torres, who maintains a commanding lead to win the Democratic nomination to rep the 15th Congressional District. \u201cHappy Belated Pride!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Board of Elections is still tallying absentee ballots from the June contests.<\/p>\n

Diaz Sr. has been a lightning rod during his two decades in Albany and on the City Council.<\/p>\n

In 2009, he joined with three other New York City state Senators in withholding support for chamber\u2019s Democratic leadership.<\/p>\n

Eventually, two of the \u201cfour amigos\u201d would become key players in the coup that paralyzed the state Senate and turned it into a national laughingstock.<\/p>\n

Diaz returned to city politics when he won a special election to take his Council seat in 2017. His tenure downtown was marked by a series<\/a> of controversies that left him almost entirely sidelined.<\/p>\n

The City Council strip<\/a>ped Diaz Sr. of his chairmanship in 2019 the committee that oversees Uber, Lyft and other for-hire vehicles after he told an interviewer that the lawmaking body was \u201ccontrolled by the homosexual community.\u201d<\/p>\n

An uproar ensued as Diaz Sr\u2019s fellow lawmakers \u2014 including Speaker Corey Johnson, who is gay \u2014 demanded the Pentecostal minister apologize, but he doubled down instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cApologize? No, for what?\u201d he one told The Post. \u201cI didn\u2019t say anything wrong. I am speaking the truth and the victim here is me. I\u2019m the one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even his son, Diaz Jr., was forced to try to distance himself as he sought to shield his aspirations from the political fallout.<\/p>\n

\u201cNYC is a place where we celebrate our diversity and inclusivity,\u201d Diaz Jr. tweeted at one point. \u201cThe LGBTQ community is unequivocally an essential voice in our City,\u201d the son\u2019s tweet continued.<\/p>\n
