Hello everyone, and welcome to Why It Works. As you may remember, last week I offered a variety of tips and tricks for finally breaking into the titanic One Piece<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong> and at last seeing what all the fuss is about. By now, I have to assume you\u2019re all hundreds of episodes into One Piece<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, chugging merrily along, unaware you\u2019re soon to be confronted with a new challenge: What do you watch after<\/em> One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong>? After enjoying the towering highs and profound range of One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s experiences, what anime could now sate your refined media<\/a> palate? Well, I never guide a reader into a place I can\u2019t guide them out of, so today I\u2019m completing my duty and offering some choice post-One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong> recommendations. Let\u2019s get to it!<\/p>\n

\"One<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

First off, if we\u2019re talking in terms of scale, there\u2019s obviously not that much like One Piece<\/strong><\/em>. The show has been running for two decades now, and unlike most truly perennial anime, it\u2019s actually been building in complexity and narrative scale all that time. That said, if you\u2019re just looking for other mammoth-sized action properties, the major contenders are all right there: Naruto<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, Black Clover<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, Fairy Tale<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, etcetera. If you\u2019re willing to branch out a bit in terms of genre, there are certainly other properties that have evolved with their creators over decades, like Mobile Suit Gundam<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> and Lupin the Third<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even if those properties can grapp<\/a>le with One Piece<\/strong><\/em> in terms of overall episode length, it\u2019s harder still to find shows that match its scale of dramatic ambition. One Piece<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s arcs build and build over time, telescoping into sizes and shapes that eclipse almost everything else in the genre. Fortunately, they don\u2019t entirely eclipse their competitors. For another action show with a wide range of artistic influences and an incredible scale of ambition, I emphatically recommend Hunter x Hunter<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, whose later arcs can proudly stand toe to toe with One Piece<\/strong><\/em>. I\u2019d also recommend Bleach<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u2019s run up through its Soul Society arc, as well as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, which is essentially composed of one self-contained arc narrative.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Hunter<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, if One Piece<\/strong><\/em> were remarkable simply for its massive scale, it never would have achieved that massive scale in the first place. And as someone who loves One Piece<\/strong><\/em> while general<\/a>ly having trouble sticking with the long-running action shows, I can personally attest that One Piece<\/strong><\/em> has a multitude of other special qualities to set it apart. So let\u2019s get deeper into the weeds and try to define what truly exemplifies the \u201cOne Piece<\/strong><\/em> spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

To build an effective One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong>, you must first start with an incredibly lovable core cast. The relationships developed between the Straw Hat Pirates are charming, emotionally satisfying, and ultimately critical to the show\u2019s appeal. They\u2019re such a pronounced strength within One Piece<\/strong><\/em> that I actually have to reach a little outside its genre wheelhouse to find others that mirror that strength. Staying at least within action, I\u2019d highly recommend Satoshi Mizukami\u2019s Planet With<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, as well as the action\/slice of life blend that is Symphogear<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>. If you\u2019re really interested in more shows about characters with charming relationships, I\u2019d recommend branching out even more broadly, and perhaps trying something like A Place Further than the Universe<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a> or even a slice of life like K-ON!<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Planet<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other elements of One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s appeal can be found in action show fragments scattered across the medium. One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong> delights in freewheeling, goofy adventures, and if you want a combination of that and more charming character bonds, I\u2019d recommend checking out the original Dragon<\/em> Ball<\/em><\/strong>. Long before Goku started battling for the fate of planets, he was rambling around with Bulma, enjoying silly episodic adventures along the way. And if you want even more rambling and goofiness, I\u2019d check out Shinichiro Watanabe<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u2019s ensemble production, Space<\/em> Dandy<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 along with his essential classic, Samurai<\/em> Champloo<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perhaps you\u2019re just looking for high-quality action entertainment and don\u2019t know where else to find it. Well, you\u2019re in luck. The last half-decade or so has offered an absurd glut of top-tier action adaptations, with many of the greatest studios in the business bringing them to life. For a quick selection, I\u2019d recommend checking out the first episodes of Mob Psycho 100<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, My Hero Academia<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, JUJUTSU KAISEN<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, Yozakura<\/em> Quartet<\/em><\/strong>, Demon Slayer<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>, Blood Blockade Battlefront<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/em>, and One Punch Man<\/strong><\/em>. Every one of those properties has a dynamite adaptation, and any of them might be just the show you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all that comes to mind for me, but I\u2019m sure there are plenty of other great next steps after One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong>. The show is so diverse in its strengths that it's impossible to cover all possible angles \u2014\u00a0but whatever One<\/em> Piece<\/em><\/strong> means to you, I'm sure there's another anime that can capture its appeal.
