Former Obama housing secretary\u00a0Shaun\u00a0Donovan\u00a0says he\u2019d be \u201cthe climate mayor,\u201d but his multimillionaire dad, who\u2019s funding his long-shot City Hall bid, is the opposite of an environmental steward. <\/p>\n

Michael\u00a0Donovan \u2014 who has given $6.8 million through a super PAC, making him the single largest donor in the entire mayoral race \u2014 owns three homes, a gas-guzzling private jet, and once destroyed wetlands in front of his $18 million Bridgehampton estate. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf candidates are taking money from polluters, they are making a big mistake because people suffer,\u201d said Maritza Silva-Farrell, head of the New York umbrella environmental group ALIGN.<\/p>\n

Michael Donovan, 80, pioneered advertising software and had a near-monopoly of the media<\/a> billing and tracking industry until his firm Donovan Data Systems merged with another company called Mediabank in 2011, forming a third entity called Mediaocean. <\/p>\n

\u201cEvery major ad agency in the world uses their software,\u201d a business colleague told The Post. <\/p>\n

The tech entrepreneur remains on Mediaocean\u2019s board. Google is now a major competitor.<\/p>\n

The merger was app<\/a>roved by President Barack Obama\u2019s Department of Justice when Shaun Donavan was a member of the cabinet. <\/p>\n

\u201cHis father stood to gain hundreds of millions of dollars from something that the DOJ was reviewing,\u201d the business colleague said. <\/p>\n

\u201cEverything was aboveboard, but it had potential to be very awkward,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Mediaocean was acquired by Vista Equity Partners in a $720 million deal in 2015. A year later, Michael Donovan landed on the Real Deal\u2019s list<\/a> of top Hamptons residential sales with his $18.2 purchase of 411 Jobs Lane in Bridgehampton. The 11,550-square-foot contemporary home has 11 bedrooms, 12-and-a-half bathrooms and a five-car garage.<\/p>\n

Michael Donovan\u2019s Manhattan address is just as impressive. He lives at 1040 Fifth Ave., a limestone luxury cooperative building that was once home to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. <\/p>\n

He has a \u201cvery nice plane to fly his family back and forth\u201d to a third home in Charlottesville, Va., the business colleague told The Post, adding that the private jet was recently upgraded from a Cessna Citation.<\/p>\n

In February 2017, a year after he bought the Long Island mansion, the Southhampton Planning Department hit Michael Donovan with a citation for mowing through a 75-foot-wide \u201cnaturally vegetative wetland\u201d in front of his home, according to Martin Shea, the town\u2019s chief environmental analyst. <\/p>\n

\u201cSome significant clearing had occurred within the restricted buffer zone,\u201d Shea told The Post. \u201cHe was required to discontinue all disturbance in that area and allow that area to come back,\u201d Shea said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWetlands are exceptionally important in terms of surface water quality, in terms of wildlife habitat,\u201d Shea said. <\/p>\n

Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder and Republican mayoral candidate, called Shaun Donovan a hypocrite for benefiting from his dad\u2019s money while claiming to care about the environment. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so typical of so many people running for office, it\u2019s \u2018Do as I say, not as I do,\u2019 or \u2018as my main benefactor, my father, has done,’\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he wants that title, of being, you know, the next green mayor, the one that\u2019s going to maintain our ecology, he\u2019s going to have to denounce his dad. He\u2019s taking money that obviously was used for reverse,\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n

Despite the millions Michael Donovan has spent on ads supporting his son, Shaun Donovan has been polling in the single digits. <\/p>\n

Neither Donovan responded to requests for comment. <\/p>\n
