Amongst the big tech companies in India, Twitter is currently the odd one out. Google, Facebook, and WhatsApp<\/a> have already complied<\/a> with India\u2019s new intermediary rules. However, the microblogging platform is yet to do that.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the\u00a0Delhi high court directed Twitter to comply with these rules within three weeks. Notably, Twitter had asked the government of India for at least a three-month extension to implement the necessary steps.<\/p>\n

Lawyer Amit\u00a0Acharya had filed the petition against the social network last week<\/a> to register a grievance against \u201cdefamatory, false and untrue\u201d tweets of some users. <\/span><\/p>\n

The petition stated that Twitter doesn\u2019t have a grievance officer based in India,, which is against the country\u2019s IT rules.\u00a0<\/span>However, as per Twitter, it has recently appointed an interim local grievance officer in India<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to India\u2019s new IT rules, significant social media intermediaries \u2014 any platform with more than 5 million users \u2014 have to appoint a nodal officer, a compliance officer, and a\u00a0grievance officer in India. Plus, they must publish compliance reports regarding complaints they receive every six months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Twitter has been in a tussle with the Indian government multiple times this year. In February, it was caught up in an issue of first blocking and then unlocking of tweets related to the long-running farmers\u2019 protest by prominent accounts. Last month, Delhi police visited Twitter\u2019s offices, related to an investigation where the company applied a \u201cmanipulated media\u201d label to some of the ruling party\u00a0leaders\u2019 tweets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
