Pfizer and Moderna will also be interchangeable as second doses.\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Advisory Committee on Immunization just gave the official okay for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mixing-and-matching<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID-19 vaccines. On June 1, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/phac-aspc\/documents\/services\/immunization\/national-advisory-committee-on-immunization-naci\/summary-interchangeability-authorized-covid-19-vaccines-en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NACI released<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guidance on vaccine interchangeability that could affect second doses for everyone who has received any one of the three vaccines currently in use: Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its recommendation are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who got a first dose of <\/span>the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AstraZeneca viral vector vaccine can now get either another dose of AstraZeneca or an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) <\/span>as their second dose<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who got a first dose of mRNA vaccine, if the same <\/span>brand of <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine isn\u2019t readily available when the time comes for a second dose, then the other mRNA vaccine \u201ccan be considered interchangeable and should be offered to complete the vaccine <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NACI\u2019s recommendation came a day after Manitoba decided to go the mix-and-match route. Dr. Joss Reimer, the medical lead for the province\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine task force, stated, \u201cIf you got a first shot of AstraZeneca, your second dose will be an mRNA vaccine\u2014either Pfizer or Moderna.\u201d The decision was made after considering data from a Spanish study on the subject as well as the decision by <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/oss\/article\/covid-19-health\/our-mix-and-match-vaccination-strategy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quebec to mix-and-match<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> COVID-19 vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 has a new name: Alpha. Will it stick?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Reimer had previously said that she wanted to wait to see results from the bigger <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/comcovstudy.org.uk\/home\">COM-Cov<\/a> mix-and-match trial\u00a0being run by Oxford University before making her decision. However, its results have been delayed until later in June, meaning waiting for results no longer works for Manitobans who received AstraZeneca shots early in the vaccine rollout. \u201cPeople want to know what vaccine they will get,\u201d Reimer said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NACI recommendation comes as provinces are ramping up their allotment<\/span>s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of second doses. On Sunday, around two-thirds of all shots given in Saskatchewan were second doses, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bcshaffer\/status\/1399470753150472192?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Blake Shaffer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an economist at the University of Calgary who has been tracking provincial statistics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing and matching vaccines isn\u2019t a new concept, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/phac-aspc\/documents\/services\/immunization\/national-advisory-committee-on-immunization-naci\/summary-interchangeability-authorized-covid-19-vaccines-en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NACI explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has been used for various multi-dose vaccines, including hepatitis A. And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers hope <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that mixing viral vector and mRNA doses could actually produce an even better immune response than keeping to one form of COVID-19 vaccine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThink of vaccination as presenting our immune system with a red flag\u2014here is something you should be on the lookout for,\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Alan Bernstein, CEO of CIFAR, a Toronto-based global research organization, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maclean\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in February<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAnd so, if you go with the mRNA vaccine first, you\u2019re going to activate one branch of our immune system.\u201d Bernstein suggests thinking of this first vaccine as our \u201cair force.\u201d Then, he says, you introduce one of the viral vector vaccines a couple of weeks later, and it tells the immune system: \u201c\u2018You saw this guy before, but I\u2019m going to present him in a different format,\u2019\u201d says Bernstein. \u201cAnd so it\u2019s going to activate a different branch of our immune system. Think of it as our navy. And so now you have the air force and the navy activated and so you\u2019ve got a double threat against this incoming virus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle to stop the pandemic is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he mix-and-match strategy took on added importance due to a rare blood clotting syndrome known as VITT, which has been linked to viral vector COVID-19 vaccines including AstraZeneca. As the number of VITT cases grew, many countries with ample supplies of mRNA vaccines, including Canada, stopped using AstraZeneca for first doses. And, as NACI notes, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/phac-aspc\/documents\/services\/immunization\/national-advisory-committee-on-immunization-naci\/summary-interchangeability-authorized-covid-19-vaccines-en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some European nations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including France and Germany, are already offering mRNA second doses to those whose first shots were AstraZeneca.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s now up to the other provinces to decide whether they will follow NACI\u2019s recommendation and allow mixing-and-matching of COVID-19 vaccines like Manitoba and Quebec.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>As Canada rolls out the country\u2019s most complex vaccination project to date, <\/i>Maclean\u2019s <i>presents <\/i>Vaxx Populi<i>, an ongoing series in which Patricia Treble tackles the most pressing questions related to the new COVID-19 vaccines.
