But the logistics? Surprisingly complicated. The production team, which includes creators Megan McGrath and Irad Eyal, spent months finding a shooting location, designing the rooms, and coming up with the lava recipe.<\/p>\n<p>From prop design to playtests to a potential second season, these are the behind-the-scenes secrets from this summer&#8217;s hottest competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-hash=\"2\">\n<div> <picture><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Floor Is Lava\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/floor-is-lava-03-1014x570.jpg\"><\/img><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><span>Adam Rose\/Netflix<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It_was_filmed_in_a_former_IKEA_in_California\"><\/span>It was filmed in a former IKEA in California<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After multiple facilities said no to the production (because who wants 100,000 gallons of \u201clava\u201d in their soundstage?), the <em>Floor Is Lava<\/em> team found a home in an abandoned IKEA warehouse in Burbank, California. \u201cWe had all of our different teams in there,\u201d McGrath tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cThere was a welding shop and the casting department, and challenge producers had a giant office that they were working in. It ended up working out really well. They really had fun with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hash=\"7\">\n<div> <picture><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Floor Is Lava\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/floor-is-lava-06-1014x570.jpg\"><\/img><\/picture><\/div>\n<p><span>Adam Rose\/Netflix<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_lava_is_a_secret_recipe\"><\/span>The lava is a secret recipe<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Creatin the nontoxic gooey lava mixture\u2014which, yes, is heated for game time\u2014took three months and at least 50 iterations. \u201cWe tasked Hollywood\u2019s No. 1 slime-manufacturing lab with coming up with the proprietary blend and then ordered more slime than any show had ever produced\u2014close to 100,000 gallons,\u201d Eyal reveals to <em>Fast Company<\/em>. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you what\u2019s in it, but our showrunner Anthony Carbone always joked that the closest thing to it is Panda Express orange sauce.
