“#NJ community outraged over fifth-grade student’s controversial Hitler project<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A New Jersey community is up in arms after a fifth-grade student\u2019s controversial report on Adolf Hitler was displayed in the elementary school\u2019s hallway for weeks, according to a report and social media<\/a> posts.<\/p>\n

The project, written in Hitler\u2019s voice, app<\/a>eared at Maugham Elementary School in Tenafly, NorthJersey.com reported<\/a>, citing a Facebook post<\/a> from a local parent Lori Birk.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy greatest accomplishment was uniting a great mass of German and Austrian people behind me,\u201d the bio read.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was pretty great, wasn\u2019t I? I was very popular and many people followed me until I died,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n

The student who completed the Hitler bio also dressed as the Nazi leader as part of the assignment, the report said.<\/p>\n

Birk told the news<\/a> site that the report was in the hallway for at least two weeks beginning in April.<\/p>\n

Community members were furious at the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the most f\u2019d up things I have ever seen,\u201d one person commented on Birk\u2019s post.<\/p>\n

Another person said: \u201cHow is this possible in one of the most Israeli towns in the country. I am disgusted.\u201d<\/p>\n

A third commenter said, \u201cI\u2019m in shock, this is terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a Tuesday statement<\/a>, Tenafly Public Schools Superintendent Shauna DeMarco said the project came from an \u201cassignment on social norms and historical figures who personify good and evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeMarco said the assignment has been taken out of context.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe assignment (which was given by a teacher who happens to be Jewish) asked students to speak from the perspective of one of these individuals and how they might have perceived and rationalized their actions,\u201d the superintendent wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people saw the students\u2019 projects, which were displayed in the school, they did not understand the assignment, resulting in justifiable concerns. Given that the lesson was specifically issued within the context of social justice, it is unfair to judge any student or teacher in this matter,\u201d DeMarco added.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
