Longtime TV actor Robert Hogan \u2014 best known for roles on \u201cPeyton Place,\u201d \u201cLaw & Order\u201d and HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Wire\u201d \u2014 has died. He was 87.<\/p>\n

His family said he died on May 27 at his home in Maine after complications from pneumonia, according to an obituary<\/a>. He was diagnosed with vascular Alzheimer\u2019s in 2013.<\/p>\n

Born in Queens, New York, Hogan enlisted in the Army after high school and served in Korea. He studied engineering at NYU before changing paths to acting, according to Deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the first semester, however, an astute professor suggested he take an aptitude test to determine if engineering was really the best fit for the gregarious young man,\u201d his family wrote in his obituary. \u201cThe test results produced two words: The arts. As Bob would say, \u2018That\u2019s when I gave acting a try.’\u201d<\/p>\n

After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he went on to amass over 150 acting credits during his 60-year career, largely on the small screen. The character actor was featured in shows like \u201cSecrets of Midland Heights,\u201d \u201cOperation Petticoat,\u201d \u201cMurder, She Wrote,\u201d \u201cGunsmoke,\u201d \u201cBarnaby Jones,\u201d \u201cThe Rockford Files\u201d and \u201cPeyton Place,\u201d in which he played Rev. Tom Winter in more than 60 episodes.<\/p>\n

Hogan\u2019s family noted he also had a wide range of parts in his day, including \u201ca helicopter pilot on \u2018M*A*S*H\u2019 to a judge on \u2018Law & Order\u2019 to a Marine in the original Broadway cast of Aaron Sorkin\u2019s \u2018A Few Good Men.’\u201d<\/p>\n

He app<\/a>eared as a guest on \u201cHogan\u2019s Heroes,\u201d which the show\u2019s co-creator Bernard Fein named after him, The Wrap reported<\/a>, though Bob Crane played the fictional Robert Hogan.<\/p>\n

In 2003, Hogan has a recurring role on HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Wire\u201d as Louis Sobotka.<\/p>\n

His career wasn\u2019t limited to the small screen, though. He also appeared in films like \u201cSpecies II\u201d and \u201cBlue Christmas\u201d as well as on and off Broadway productions. He won the Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance as famed attorney Clarence Darrow in \u201cNever the Sinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, novelist Mary Hogan, three children from a previous marriage to fine artist, Shannon Hogan, and two grandchildren.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
