John Hinckley Jr., the gunman who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in a bid to win actress Jodie Foster\u2019s heart, has traded his six-shooter for a six-string \u2014 racking up thousands of views on YouTube<\/a> with his guitar renditions of sentimental love songs.<\/p>\n

Hinckley, now 66, won a lengthy court battle last year, freeing him to publicly display his music, writings and other art, and potentially make a living in the recording industry.<\/p>\n

Since then, Hinckley has published a half-dozen videos to a YouTube channel bearing his real name, starting with a performance of an original composition titled \u201cMajesty of Love.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen every couple settles down, goodness will be found, this is the majesty of love,\u201d he croons over bright acoustic strumming. \u201cThe world is still in so much pain, but we have much to gain, this is the majesty of love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the six performances posted to the account since December, four are original songs, while two are covers: Elvis Presley\u2019s \u201cCan\u2019t Help Falling in Love\u201d and Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cBlowin\u2019 in the Wind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most are recorded in a room lined with at least five clocks visible behind Hinckley.<\/p>\n

On March 30, 1981, Hinckley opened fire on Reagan outside a Washington, DC, hotel, emptying his revolver.<\/p>\n

The president was struck by a round in the chest, and three others were also wounded in the barrage, including press secretary James Brady, who would remain partially paralyzed for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

Reagan was hospitalized for nearly two weeks, but survived.<\/p>\n

Hinckley harbored an obsession with the movie \u201cTaxi Driver,\u201d likening himself to Robert De Niro\u2019s titular lone-wolf hack, Travis Bickle, and fixating on Foster, who portrayed a child prostitute in the cinema classic.<\/p>\n

In the years preceding the assassination attempt, Hinckley stalked Foster and attempted to gain her attention, before ultimately plotting to kill the president \u2014 mirroring Bickle\u2019s aborted bid to murder a fictitious political candidate.<\/p>\n

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a psychiatric institution, where he spent 35 years.<\/p>\n

In 2016, Hinckley was cleared to move in with his mother in Virginia, and two years later to live on his own.<\/p>\n

Upon discovering Hinckley\u2019s creative outlet, viewers plastered the comment sections of his videos with reviews, many of them morbid jokes about his claim to infamy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is definitely a more constructive way to get Jodi [sic] Foster\u2019s attention,\u201d wrote one user.<\/p>\n

Cracked another, \u201cMight\u2019ve failed assassination but you didn\u2019t fail to hit those beats.\u201d<\/p>\n

But others were pleasantly surprised by Hinckley\u2019s tunes, lavishing praise on \u201cMajesty of Love\u201d and wishing him well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard you were released and making songs on YouTube I thought it was a joke, but far out this was such a beautiful song,\u201d wrote one fan. \u201cYou are very talented, please make more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added another, \u201ccame for the meme, stayed because it\u2019s actually pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n
