The data showed that 39.4 million people have had their first dose, while 25.7 million have had their second. The strain, now renamed as the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/coronavirus-variants-given-new-names-by-the-who-under-new-system-heres-the-full-list-12321777\" class=\"icon none\">Delta variant<\/a> by the World Health Organization, has been\u00a0linked to a spike in cases in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Prof. Mark Walport, a member of the\u00a0Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-57313399\" class=\"icon none\">BBC Breakfast<\/a> on Monday that the situation was \u201cvery delicately balanced,\u201d as the Delta variant is more transmissible. He said more data were needed over the next two weeks to help Johnson make the \u201cdifficult decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His view was echoed by Prof. Adam Finn, a member of the U.K.\u2019s vaccine advisory committee,\u00a0the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, who suggested on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.lbc.co.uk\/news\/minister-urges-caution-around-june-21-date-of-lockdown-lifting\/\" class=\"icon none\">LBC Radio<\/a> that going ahead with the reopening on June 21 would be a \u201cbad decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Downing Street has indicated that Johnson still sees nothing in the data to suggest the plan to end restrictions in England on June 21 will need to be delayed.
