“#’Why Women Kill’ back for Season 2<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy Women Kill\u201d returns Thursday (June 3) for Season 2 on a rebranded network \u2014 but with the same campy tone courtesy of series<\/a> creator Marc Cherry.<\/p>\n

Season 1 of the anthology, which streamed on CBS All Access (now Paramount+) with stars Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, followed three women in different time periods (the \u201960s, \u201980s and 2019) sharing one thing in common: adulterous husbands.<\/p>\n

This time around, \u201cWhy Women Kill\u201d sticks to one year, 1949, in tracking the parallel stories of frumpy LA housewife Alma Fillcot (Allison Tolman) and glamorous golddigger Rita Castillo (Lana Parrilla). <\/p>\n

Alma\u2019s married to beloved, obese veterinarian Dr. Bertram \u201cBertie\u201d Filcott (Nick Frost), while Rita is fooling around on her much-older, extremely rich husband, the despotic Carlo (Daniel Zacapa), with Scooter (Matthew Daddario), a dim-bulb \u201caspiring actor\u201d who\u2019s using Rita to get a leg up in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

Alma, who feels she\u2019s ignored by everyone \u2014 except by Bertie and by their daughter Dee (BK Cannon), a waitress \u2014 dreams of being asked to join the local prestigious gardening club, and of making \u201celegant friends,\u201d including Rita, who\u2019s a member along with other petty society types. <\/p>\n

Bertie, meanwhile, is hiding a deep, dark secret that Alma will eventually discover. Dee, like her mother, feels adrift, vulnerable and unseen in her everyday life save for her illicit affair \u2026 with Scooter, who\u2019s being tailed by a private investigator (Jordane Christie) hired by the distrustful Rita. <\/p>\n

Added to this crisscross plot mix is Catherine (Veronica Falcon), Carlo\u2019s grown daughter who arrives in LA after her father\u2019s stroke leaves him paralyzed and mute \u2014 and in Rita\u2019s crosshairs.<\/p>\n

The cartoonish situations play out on studio back-lot sets that are supposed to pass for the downtown and suburban streets of LA \u2014 you can almost hear someone flipping the switch on those studio rain machines to simulate torrential downpours \u2014 and with a heavy-lidded wink to the audience not to take any of it very seriously. I suppose that\u2019s the point of this farcical series, very similar in tone to Cherry\u2019s other shows, particularly ABC\u2019s \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d and, to a lesser extent \u201cDevious Maids,\u201d which aired on Lifetime.<\/p>\n

The performances are fine all-around (particularly Nick Frost as Bertie), and no one here is tasked with any heavy lifting since \u201cWhy Women Kill\u201d mixes light, gentle comedy with elements of \u201cthe human condition\u201d but isn\u2019t very deep or multi-dimensional. It will please Cherry\u2019s fans \u2014 and viewers who need a break from deep drama or who favor lighthearted fare that won\u2019t tax their emotions.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
