Identical twins Amy Fuggiti and Courtney Essenpreis have done everything together over the years, whether it was attending the same college, playing their favorite sports of softball and basketball or grabbing coffee every morning.<\/p>\n

Now the sisters\u2019 bond has been further strengthened through an incredible act of generosity \u2014 Courtney is carrying Amy\u2019s longed-for baby.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even have to ask her to be our surrogate,\u201d Amy told The Post. \u201cWe\u2019re so intrinsically tied, it felt like something that was supposed to happ<\/a>en.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old Chicagoans, who shared their story on the podcast \u201cPregnantish<\/a>,\u201d can\u2019t wait for the arrival of the little girl in October.<\/p>\n

She is the result of IVF paired with a procedure known as PGT-M, or pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic\/single gene defects. It\u2019s a complex test of an embryo that\u2019s meant to reduce the risk of having a child with a genetic condition.<\/p>\n

Amy and Courtney<\/a> \u2014 who are so-called mirror twins<\/a>, with matching freckles on opposite sides of their faces, and one is right handed and the other left handed \u2014 have the chromosomal disorder Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome. In their case, it caused them to be diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of 12, extreme symptoms of which include blindness and heart abnormalities.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a 50 percent chance the women\u2019s offspring would inherit the potentially debilitating condition, and genetic testing was the way forward. The pricey procedure involves screening embryos in the lab and only transferring those without the disorder. However, an extra complication for Amy was the way her uterus had rejected healthy embryos in the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lost count of the number of retrievals I\u2019ve had,\u201d said Amy, a compliance coordinator. She was plagued with bad luck during four years of IVF cycles. The embryos created with her husband, Anthony, 38, either failed the genetic testing or did not implant following transfer. Once, the couple\u2019s hopes were raised, but it turned out not to be a viable pregnancy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were so many opportunities for things to go wrong,\u201d said Amy, who, with her spouse, has spent tens of thousands of dollars to start a family. \u201cIt was disappointment after disappointment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, what we call our \u2018golden embryo\u2019 was created last July.\u201d<\/p>\n

This time, Courtney carrying the baby was \u201cthe logical next step,\u201d with the decision immedia<\/a>tely sanctioned by Amy\u2019s specialist. In early February, the sisters held hands during the transfer of the frozen, 5-day-old blastocyst. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to get our hopes up too much after all the disappointments,\u201d admitted Amy.<\/p>\n

But they were in luck. She recalled the moment Courtney confirmed her positive pregnancy test. The outpouring of joy reinforced her sense that the miracle baby \u201cbelongs\u201d not only to her and Anthony, but also to her twin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I say \u2018We\u2019re pregnant,\u2019 I mean myself, my husband and my sister,\u201d Amy said, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful celebration of life, because all three of us did this together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Courtney, who has previously gotten pregnant three times through IVF <\/a>and PGT-M, has safely delivered two kids. Her youngest, now 2 \u00bd, was a true blessing, born after the tragic loss of a daughter during Courtney\u2019s second trimester. <\/p>\n

Her current pregnancy as a gestational carrier is going well, despite bouts of morning sickness in the first few weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been totally normal,\u201d said Courtney, who works as an assistant at a university. \u201cThe fact I\u2019m pregnant with my sister\u2019s baby feels entirely normal. It\u2019s a means of getting from point A to B without much fanfare.\u201d<\/p>\n

She joked that IVF has dominated their lives so much, her offspring think all babies are conceived in a lab. \u201cWe can forget the birds and bees talk,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Indeed, as soon as she\u2019s old enough to understand, Amy\u2019s daughter will be told about her origins. \u201cWe plan to be totally transparent,\u201d Amy said. \u201cShe\u2019ll know that her aunt was her babysitter for nine months and she was wanted and loved for a very long time.\u201d <\/p>\n

The tot will also be raised \u201cby the village\u201d of the entire family, just like her cousins, who will no doubt regard her as their little sister.<\/p>\n

As for the baby\u2019s birth, Amy and Anthony will be there \u201cto hold Courtney\u2019s hand\u201d during the labor. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nobody I would rather do this with,\u201d said Amy. \u201cIf I couldn\u2019t have my own pregnancy, who better than my soul mate to make my dream come true?\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
