The population of\u00a0Atlantic great white sharks\u00a0has reportedly expanded along\u00a0Massachusetts\u2019\u00a0Cape Cod peninsula, with detections on the rise.<\/p>\n

While numbers of\u00a0the feared fish\u00a0on the East Coast are markedly less than\u00a0those swimming in the Pacific<\/a>, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) has reported numbers increasing since the species was designated as a\u00a0protected species\u00a0in most federal waters in the 1990s and in Massachusetts state waters in 2005.<\/p>\n

The conservancy asserts that the rise over the past few years indicates recovery in the area. However, according to\u00a0the organization\u2019s website<\/a>, that \u201cstock status remains uncertain\u201d and that an increased presence is also linked to\u00a0rising seal populations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

AWSC researchers told The Boston Herald<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday that data from eight years ago showed there were\u00a0only 11 individual sharks<\/a>\u00a0detected along the Cape.<\/p>\n

However, in 2020 the group\u00a0detected 118 individual sharks<\/a>\u00a0in the region \u2013 although there were notably more acoustic transmitters deployed to aid in the search.<\/p>\n

In April, AWSC announced the first basking shark sighting off Provincetown\u2019s Herring Cove Beach,\u00a0noting in a tweet<\/a>\u00a0that basking shark fins are often mistaken for white shark fins.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, 231 individual great white sharks have been tagged by\u00a0Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries<\/a>\u00a0transmitters since 2010 \u2013 a total allegedly less than reported by local researchers.<\/p>\n

In 2019,\u00a0researchers said<\/a>\u00a0they had tagged more sharks on the Cape than ever before.<\/p>\n

Rhode Island\u2019s Atlantic Shark Institute said in 2020 that they had\u00a0detected nine great white sharks<\/a>\u00a0in nearby waters.<\/p>\n

The most detections, according to AWSC, have been in August over the last four years. Shark season extends through the end of October.<\/p>\n

AWSC did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to Fox News<\/a>\u2019 request for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n

Populations have also been seen rising on the West Coast, especially as\u00a0temperatures warm.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the Florida Museum,<\/strong>\u00a0the odds of being attacked<\/a>\u00a0and killed by a shark are 1 in 3,748,067.<\/p>\n

In 2018,\u00a0a 26-year-old man was killed<\/a>\u00a0after he was attacked at Newcomb Hollow Beach \u2013 the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts since 1936.<\/p>\n

In addition,\u00a0scientists\u00a0warn that the apex predators patrol the shoreline for seals\u00a0at all times of the day<\/a>.\n <\/div>\n
