{"id":26589,"date":"2020-07-13T23:07:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T20:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/farm-workers-with-coronavirus-escape-quarantine-after-major-outbreak\/"},"modified":"2020-07-13T23:07:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T20:07:00","slug":"farm-workers-with-coronavirus-escape-quarantine-after-major-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/farm-workers-with-coronavirus-escape-quarantine-after-major-outbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"#Farm workers with coronavirus escape quarantine after major outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Farm workers with coronavirus escape quarantine after major outbreak<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        Three workers with coronavirus have gone on the run from a farm after 75 people caught the bug and hundreds were forced to quarantine on site.<\/p>\n<p>The outbreak in Mathon, Herefordshire, is being closely monitored by PHE Midlands and there is a heavy police presence around the farm, where all 220 workers were told to isolate in mobile homes.<\/p>\n<p>Four vegetable pickers \u2013 including three with the killer bug \u2013 have now taken off and fled the farm, a source told The Sun Online.<\/p>\n<p>Two left on Saturday \u2013 one of whom was positive \u2013 and two more infected with the virus fled today.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed they legged it across the fields.<\/p>\n<p>In order to try and keep workers \u2013 most of them from Eastern Europe \u2013 at the farm, the authorities are offering them \u201cbeer and cigarettes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Workers\u2019 passports are kept \u201csecure\u201d at the farm, according to the source.<\/p>\n<p>The military were initially asked to provide tents and toilets for the workers during the current enforced quarantine, but they said they were unable to assist as it was \u201csuch short notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first case was recorded by farm owners AS Green and Co, according to the source, on Wednesday last week.<\/p>\n<p>Five more tested positively the next day and by the weekend, when the farm was locked down, 72 cases had tested positive. Today the figure is 75.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are concerned that workers made regular <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s to a Morrisons store in nearby Malvern, the source said.<\/p>\n<p>Although police cars patrolled the outskirts of the farm every half hour today, there has been no officer standing at the entrance and no sign of searches for the missing workers being conducted.<\/p>\n<p>Mass testing was carried out after some workers \u2013 many of whom are from eastern Europe \u2013 showed symptoms sparking the largest outbreak of its kind in the UK since the pandemic began.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures from the site show police officers wearing protective face masks while guarding the gates at both the entrance and the exit.<\/p>\n<p>Herefordshire County Council today confirmed to The Sun Online that several workers had fled the farm but claimed three not four workers had absconded \u2013 and insisted only one of them had tested positive for coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Wright, director of public health, was unable to say when or how they absconded but claimed \u2018agencies\u2019, which she refused to identify by name, knew where the person who tested positive was staying. However, she admitted she did not know.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the person was self-isolating but refused to say whether or not the whereabouts of the other two workers were known.<\/p>\n<p>The health chief repeated her the assurances from yesterday that there was no health risk to the community.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after the Midlands regions have seen spikes in cases in recent weeks, with Leicester remaining under lockdown \u2013 and the UK death toll doubled on last week.<\/p>\n<p>The dozens of new cases at producers AS Green and Co comes during harvesting season, where workers come and live on site on the Herefordshire-Worcestershire border.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUG SPREAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the busy summer season they spend their days picking and packing vegetables \u2013 supplying stores such as Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Spence, PHE Midlands Health Protection Director, said on Sunday: \u201cA small number of workers became symptomatic earlier this week and they and a few close contacts among the workforce were tested initially and found to be positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with NHS guidance, affected individuals were asked to self-isolate for seven days, with their households and close contacts asked to isolate for 14 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we have seen a global trend of large food producers being subject to outbreaks, as a precautionary measure, the decision was made to test the entire workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe initial batch of results showed a significant percentage of positive cases, despite these individuals being asymptomatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for AS Green said: \u201cOur staff are our priority, they are hard-working key workers helping us provide food for the country during these unusual times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe contacted PHE and we are working closely with them and Public Health at Herefordshire Council to prevent the spread of Covid-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>CASE RISE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rate of infection in Herefordshire stands at 421.1 cases per 100,000 people, which remains lower than the England average of 444.6, figures from Public Health England show.<\/p>\n<p>It comes a week after pubs and restaurants opened up their doors once more as restrictions were relaxed in England.<\/p>\n<p>Leicester is in lockdown for another week as official scramble to get the outbreak there under control.<\/p>\n<p>There have been outbreaks in food production sites, clothing factories and in large multi-generational households.<\/p>\n<p>About 28 per cent of Leicester\u2019s population is of Indian heritage, and a further 21 per cent are from black or Asian backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Language barriers, high levels of diabetes and poverty may have played a part in the new surge.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Hancock said last week the measures had already brought the rate of infection down.<\/p>\n<p>The Health Secretary has revealed is there are more than 100 outbreaks of coronavirus h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp;
