Michael Waldron<\/strong>\u00a0has his hands in several big properties at Disney at the moment, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness<\/em> and the mysterious Star Wars<\/em> film being produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. But next week, viewers will have the chance to see his work as the head writer of Loki<\/strong><\/em>, the highly anticipated Marvel streaming series<\/a> coming to Disney+.<\/p>\n

In a new profile, Waldron revealed some surprising movies that influenced his new time-hopping crime series, including Quentin Tarantino\u2019s Inglourious Basterds<\/em>, Steven Spielberg\u2019s Catch Me If You Can<\/em>, and\u2026Richard Linklater\u2019s Before Sunrise<\/em>? Yep, it sounds like a romance may be in the cards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waldron is a veteran of the beloved animated sci-fi show Rick and Morty<\/em>, but as he told Vanity Fair<\/a>, he quickly realized Loki<\/em> would be a whole different thing. \u201cAt first I was carrying in the\u00a0Rick and Morty<\/em>\u00a0sensibility and I had to recalibrate,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not writing a 22-minute cartoon. I was watching\u00a0Quentin Tarantino\u00a0movies \u2014\u00a0Inglourious Basterds<\/em>. Movies that luxuriate in long scenes of dialogue and tension building.\u201d
\nI\u2019m still not entirely sure exactly how Before Sunrise<\/em> will work itself into the mix (although that film does luxuriate in long scenes of dialogue), but Catch Me If You Can<\/em> feels like a more natural touchstone for a story about a slippery character like Loki who seems to want to escape from the clutches of the Time Variance Authority, the organization that captures him after he stole the tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame<\/a><\/em>. There\u2019s even a bit of a platonic love story at play between Loki and Owen Wilson\u2019s Mr. Mobius \u2013 one that mirrors the type of relationship between Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s characters in the Spielberg movie. Waldron also cited\u00a0Blade Runner<\/em> as another of his\u00a0Loki<\/em> influences, so I\u2019m curious to see how that movie is folded into this series as well.<\/p>\n

And while it may be all the rage for directors to compare their shows to \u201csix hour movies,\u201d Waldron is taking a more old-school app<\/a>roach with this series. \u201cIt was important that every episode stood alone,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Leftovers<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Watchmen<\/em>, which I admired so much\u2014every one of those episodes felt like a distinct short story. That\u2019s the sign of a great episode of TV. \u2018Oh, it\u2019s\u00a0that<\/em>\u00a0episode of\u00a0Loki<\/em>.’\u201d<\/p>\n

But fans of Rick and Morty<\/em> shouldn\u2019t be too disappointed: after all, this is a time travel<\/a> show. And Waldron knows all too well the amount of attention this show is going to receive when it premieres \u2013 and thankfully it sounds like it will be able to stand up to the inevitable scrutiny that will come with the week-to-week release format.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always very acutely aware of the fact that there\u2019s a week between each of our episodes and these fans are going to do exactly what I would do, which is pick this apart,\u201d he admitted. \u201cWe wanted to create a time-travel logic that was so airtight it could sustain over six hours. There\u2019s some time-travel sci-fi concepts here that I\u2019m eager for my\u00a0Rick and Morty<\/em>\u00a0colleagues to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
