An Italian artist sold an invisible sculpture for over $18,000 and had to give the buyer a certificate of authenticity to prove it\u2019s real, the Daily Mail reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Salvatore Garau sold his piece, entitled \u201cIo Sono\u201d (I am), to an unidentified buyer last month.<\/p>\n

Italian auction house Art-Rite organized the sale of the \u201cimmaterial\u201d statue in May with a beginning estimated value coming in between $7,000 and $11,000. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that \u2018nothing\u2019 has a weight,\u201d the Sardinian-born artist explained, according to Hypebeast<\/a>. \u201cTherefore, it has energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 67-year-old explained in a video<\/a> that \u201cyou don\u2019t see it but it exists; it is made of air and spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a work that asks you to activate the power of the imagination,\u00a0a power that anyone has, even those who don\u2019t believe they have it,\u201d he continued<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The \u201cair and spirit\u201d sculpture is intended to be contained in a 5-by-5-foot square and is intended to be displayed in a private space without artificial lighting and climate control. <\/p>\n

Garau defended his invisible art with a grandiose comparison: \u201cAfter all, don\u2019t we shape a God we\u2019ve never seen?\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first piece of Garau\u2019s that is unrecognizable to the human eye. In February, the artist exhibited\u00a0\u201cBuddha In Contemplation,\u201d another invisible sculpture at the Piazza della Scala in Milan. And just this week, Garau installed\u00a0his most recent statue, \u201cAfrodite Piange,\u201d\u00a0facing the New York Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n

The invisible work comes amidst a rise in popularity of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that are one-of-a-kind, verifiable digital assets traded on blockchain technology<\/a>. In March, the first NFT sold by Christie\u2019s by the artist Beeple went for $69.3 million and Sotheby\u2019s is set to auction off the world\u2019s first known NFT this week.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
