It\u2019s the end of an era for D\u2019Agostino\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nicholas D\u2019Agostino III \u2014 whose family founded their namesake grocery chain in 1932 \u2014 has quietly stepped down as president and chief operating officer of D\u2019Agostino\u2019s and its sister chain Gristedes, The Post has learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Billionaire John Catsimatidis \u2014 who engineered the merger of the two iconic Big App<\/a>le chains in 2016 when D\u2019Agostino\u2019s was struggling to pay its bills, putting D\u2019Agostino at the helm \u2014 disclosed the changes to employees a few weeks ago in a memo obtained by The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an interview this week, Catsimatidis confirmed the shakeup, saying D\u2019Agostino, 59, has been bumped to vice chairman and will be replaced by two executives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe changed things up,\u201d Catsimatidis told The Post. \u201cNick is less involved in the day-to-day operations,\u201d instead overseeing real estate and special projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both businesses have shrunk dramatically over the years, with Gristedes down to 18 stores from 200 in its heyday and 11 D\u2019Agostino\u2019s stores, down from 26 at its peak in the New York metro area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

D\u2019Agostino took over the company from his father in the early 2000s and is the last of his four siblings to be involved in the business.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn was unhappy with the operations and profitability of the business,\u201d an insider told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Catsimatidis for his part said \u201cwe\u2019ll use everyone\u2019s strengths to make our company better.\u201d D\u2019Agostino did not respond to e-mails.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gristedes Senior Vice President Christopher McGrath was named interim president while veteran Kings supermarket executive Joseph Parisi was tapped as COO. The company did not issue a press release about the shakeup.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
