Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that looks at the cinematic resonances in \u2014 and influences on \u2014 Christopher Nolan\u2019s Tenet.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Very few filmmakers create within a vacuum. I challenge you to think of a filmmaker who, by and large, is not enthusiastic, open, and enamored with their own cinematic influences. Movie-making is an inherently referential art, and a lot of it rhymes with each other, intentionally or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>And sure, there are downsides to this distinctly post-modern notion that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nJPERZDfyWc\">everything is a remix<\/a>. In certain instances, plagiarism can masquerade under the cover of homage. There is also the lurking fear that too much intertextuality can stifle genuinely new ideas. But I think we\u2019d be kidding ourselves to argue that filmmakers don\u2019t watch films and that these films don\u2019t then affect their own creative output.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that <strong>Christopher Nolan<\/strong> is a passionate cinephile. What is <em><strong>Inception<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>if not a love letter to Satoshi Kon\u2019s <em>Paprika<\/em>? How can you watch\u00a0<em><strong>Interstellar<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>and not see the connective tissue to the likes of\u00a0<em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>,<em> Solaris,<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Slaughterhouse-Five<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Noting cinematic rhymes and visual similarities isn\u2019t necessarily pejorative. Instead, I\u2019d argue such comparisons merely acknowledge the fruitful reality that art influences artists.
