The nature of time, the nature of fate, the nature of existence itself. Written and directed by Christopher MacBride, \u201cFlashback\u201d has a narrative that posits that \u201cwhat might have been\u201d actually is, or maybe was, in an alternate timeline, and that how we understand time can throw us into catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>The movie begins in the glum here and now of Fred Fitzell (Dylan O&#8217;Brien). He has a dying mother who\u2019s got days to live, and not well\u2014her mind is going as well as his spirit. He\u2019s married, has a new apartment, a new job, but his existence is suffused with glumness. In a brief blackout state, in which some brutal gothed out reprobates <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to be assaulting him, we see that things could be worse. And they get worse, and worse than that.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<section>\n<section>\n<p>Fred still lives in his home town, and starts seeking out old high school classmates when he gets curious about the fate of a girl named Cindy Williams (not the \u201cLaverne and Shirley\u201d costar, mind you). His high school misadventures involved the abuse of a street drug called \u201cMercury,\u201d which His Fellow Kids nickname \u201cMerc.\u201d One night in the past a Merc session morning-after found Cindy disappeared.   <\/p>\n<p>Soon the current timeline\u2014in which Fred goofs off at work, sketching his boss as she yammers on about granular metrics in spite of the fact that he\u2019s got a major presentation coming up soon\u2014alternates with Fred\u2019s high-school timeline, in which he\u2019s likely to screwup a major final administered by an impossibly pompous teacher. The scary people show up, too, as does a scary screeching head, or something, in one of several Lynchian-aspirant bits. There\u2019s also a spooky kid in a hoodie. It\u2019s a lot.   <\/p>\n<p>And it mostly doesn\u2019t quite work, because Fred, as written by MacBride and played by Dylan O\u2019Brien, just isn\u2019t a compelling character. He\u2019s mopey and uninteresting from frame one, his high school hairstyle wig is almost abominable, and his surroundings mistake \u201cdreary\u201d for \u201craw.\u201d The movie\u2019s roots are in a lot of interesting stuff, from \u201cBlue Sunshine\u201d to \u201cDonnie Darko,\u201d and more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> like \u201cSynchronic,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Thinking of Ending Things\u201d and \u201cThe Roads Not Taken.\u201d But MacBride strains for effect too often to pull you in\u2014at one point, for instance, I almost said to the screen \u201cStop trying to make \u2018Merc\u2019 happen.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>And compounding these shortcomings is that, after asking a good many provocative questions, \u201cFlashback\u201d lands on the most banal of conclusions.
