Hurricanes\u00a0are expected to threaten more than 32 million homes across the coastal United States this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A report released Wednesday from\u00a0real estate\u00a0analytics firm CoreLogic Inc. said the homes \u2013 both single-family homes and homes in multi-unit buildings \u2013 were at moderate to greater risk from the\u00a0damaging winds\u00a0of a hurricane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition,\u00a0CoreLogic reported<\/a>\u00a0that close to 8 million of the homes had either direct or indirect coastal exposure and subsequent risk from storm surge and other hurricane danger.<\/p>\n

The firm said that while hurricane wind damage is \u201cgeneral<\/a>ly insured for most homes,\u201d\u00a0flood insurance\u00a0is not \u201cuniformly purchased\u201d and that up to 70 percent of damages from flood to homes is uninsured.<\/p>\n

The report \u2013 which\u00a0E&E News said<\/a>\u00a0provides the first measurement of wind risk amidst climate change \u2013 calculated that at-risk properties have a combined reconstruction cost value of trillions, with an adverse effect on\u00a0economically disadvantaged\u00a0residents and communities.<\/p>\n

Additionally, while storm surge was shown to be less of a headache than wind damage, most properties in the line of storm surge are also at the risk of wind and hurricane damage.<\/p>\n

CoreLogic noted that the figures were based on the assumption of total destruction of the structure and did not include the value of the land or lot.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen lower income communities are hit with disaster, it can be even more challenging to recover. Many lower-income communities may not have the ability to afford insurance, or know their house is at risk of hurricane damage,\u201d the group pointed out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen homes are destroyed, many uninsured homeowners are left with few options. Damaged homes, often unsuitable for habitation, mean that people are displaced, living in motel rooms and elsewhere and spending money on new, added expenses. Their place of work may be damaged, locking them out of earning income,\u201d it wrote.<\/p>\n

For example,\u00a0Louisianans\u00a0are still rebuilding and continue to\u00a0live in campers<\/a>\u00a0or next to the cement slabs where their houses once stood after Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta\u00a0slammed areas of the state last fall.<\/p>\n

CoreLogic also pointed out that mortgage delinquency rates rise significantly as homeowners, crippled by expenses and lost wages, fail to make monthly mortgage payments and said the impact of a\u00a0changing climate\u00a0continues to increase risk in hurricane-prone areas.<\/p>\n

Using 40 years of data from the\u00a0National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s (NOAA)\u00a0National Centers for Environmental Information, the report said total inflation-adjusted weather-related losses in the US have increased by between 70 percent and 90 percent every decade.<\/p>\n

Noting that the \u201ctrend\u201d was not slowing, CoreLogic said many observed increases were driven by population migrations to high-risk and more affordable coastal areas subject to climate-related issues.<\/p>\n

Some of those problems include rising\u00a0sea level, extreme rainfall events and increases in hurricane intensity.<\/p>\n

The Atlantic Hurricane Season, which began on June 1 and extends through Nov. 30, is\u00a0forecast to be \u201cabove-normal.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

NOAA researchers predicted\u00a0a likelihood of 13 to 20 total named storms in 2021<\/u><\/a>, with six to 10 likely to become hurricanes and three to five likely to become major hurricanes.<\/p>\n

In a city-based analysis of risk from damaging winds and storm surge, CoreLogic reported that the\u00a0New York City\u00a0metropolitan area had the greatest estimated reconstruction value, totaling $1.7 trillion.<\/p>\n

Miami\u00a0took second place on the Florida-heavy rankings, with\u00a0New Orleans,\u00a0Virginia Beach\u00a0and\u00a0Houston\u00a0in the top 10.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
