“#Iconic ‘Complex Characters’ Revisit Legendary Boxing Moments<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

During the 1980s, Roberto Dur\u00e1n, \u201cMarvelous\u201d Marvin Hagler, Thomas \u201cThe Hitman\u201d Hearns, and \u201cSugar\u201d Ray Leonard took one another on, battling and brawling their way through nine of the most famous championship matches in boxing history.<\/p>\n

Those extraordinary fights are central to The Kings<\/i>, a four-part docuseries<\/a> about the quartet who, as one observer notes, \u201cdominated the era, but not each other.\u201d They rose from poverty to prosperity, egged on by roaring crowds and soaring purses in the millions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved the way the crowd made me feel,\u201d the 62-year-old Hearns now recalls of those heady ring days. \u201cI always wanted to give them a little bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n

That addiction to glory provides the bittersweet flip side to the so-called sweet science<\/a>, as the brutal ballet took its toll on each fighter in bloody knockouts, broken bones, and, in Leonard\u2019s case, near blindness from a partially detached retina. Each competitor played a role in the drama.<\/p>\n

Hagler and Hearns rose hungry and fought for respect; to Dur\u00e1n, any win was a victory for Panama over the despised U.S.; and the telegenic Leonard was the Olympic golden boy the other three chased for top money. \u201cHe was the superstar, the new Muhammad Ali,\u201d says Mat Whitecross, director of The Kings<\/i>. \u201cThese were complex characters who really complemented each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whitecross took two years to pull this project together, working hand in glove with Hearns and Dur\u00e1n and using archival interviews with Hagler and Leonard to fill out the picture. Alongside images of Reagan-era politics and social<\/a> unrest, and fresh interviews from notable commentators, what stands out are those fights that still land with power: Dur\u00e1n quitting his 1980 rematch with Leonard by allegedly declaring \u201cNo m\u00e1s\u201d to the referee.<\/p>\n

Leonard\u2019s 1981 comeback win over Hearns after cornerman Angelo Dundee warned, \u201cYou\u2019re blowin\u2019 it, son!\u201d And the fight many call the greatest ever: Hagler\u2019s 1985 win over Hearns after trading a mad flurry of punches that left Hearns\u2019 right hand broken. Hearns is still wistful over Hagler\u2019s death March 13 at 66. \u201cI love Marvin,\u201d he says. \u201cIf he was still here, we could go at it again.\u201d<\/p>\n
