Daniel Craig<\/strong> is our current James Bond, but things could\u2019ve gone differently if he hadn\u2019t gone out drinking with Mark Strong<\/strong>. In a new interview, Strong recounts a story about how he was set to audition for the role of the new 007, and how that audition went horribly wrong because he spent the night before getting wasted with none other than Daniel Craig. Coincidence, or Craig\u2019s ingenious plan to make sure he himself got the part? You decide!<\/p>\n

I like Mark Strong, but I don\u2019t know if I can picture him as James Bond. And I\u2019ll probably never have to, because according to Strong, he already bombed his Bond audition. When it was time to find a new Bond a few years ago, several actors were in consideration, including Strong. While app<\/a>earing on the Sky series<\/a>\u00a0There\u2019s Something About Movies<\/a>, Strong recounted his disastrous audition \u2013 and included an amusing twist.
\nAccording to Strong, the night before his audition, he \u201clearned the lines,\u201d and then \u201cto celebrate,\u201d he \u201cwent out for a drink\u201d and \u201cgot pissed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI overdid it and the next day I was severely hungover,\u201d he continued. \u201cI started [the audition] and then I just forgot my lines. I couldn\u2019t remember what they were and they all just kind of fell apart.\u00a0I was sweating, it was a terrible experience \u2014 but I really learned from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s where that twist comes in. \u201cThe irony was that the guy I was out the night before getting pissed with was Daniel Craig,\u201d Strong said. \u201cSo, yeah, I blame him.\u201d Strong told this story in jest, and there\u2019s obviously no bad blood between Strong and Craig \u2013 Craig is even a godfather to one of Strong\u2019s children. But still, it\u2019s incredibly funny to think that Craig deliberately got Strong drunk so he would bomb the audition, setting Craig up to win the role.<\/p>\n

This was probably the best outcome \u2013 Craig made for a great Bond, and Strong seems better suited to play a Bond villain.\u00a0In any case, maybe there\u2019s still hope for Strong. The delayed but upcoming\u00a0No Time to Die<\/em><\/strong> is Craig\u2019s last outing as 007, at which point it\u2019ll be time to cast a new Bond. And while the producers will probably look for a younger actor to step into James Bond\u2019s tux, Strong could always give it a go again. But if a younger actor from the U.K. invites him out for drinks the night before that audition, he should probably say no.<\/p>\n
