A Florida zoo is mourning the tragic loss of 12 stingrays whose deaths remain a mystery.<\/p>\n

Staff at ZooTampa say conditions in their tank were \u201coptimal,\u201d and further mechanical and chemical testing of the stingray habitat has yet to reveal any clues since they were found dead on May 27 \u2014 the day of the zoo\u2019s grand reopening after closing during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s with heavy hearts we share that today ZooTampa lost 12 residents of Stingray Bay,\u201d read a somber message on the zoo\u2019s Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease keep our team in your thoughts \u2014 every professional here loves the animals we care for, and any loss is a difficult one,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n

According to the Tampa Bay Times<\/a>, the stingrays died suddenly, within an hour of staffers reporting their abnormal behavior. Veterinarians were called immedia<\/a>tely but arrived moments too late.<\/p>\n

ZooTampa\u2019s 16,000-gallon stingray tank featured three different stingray species \u2014 seven cownose, four southern and one Atlantic \u2014 all of whom were affected by the same mysterious illness. The loss of captive cownose is particularly disconcerting, as they\u2019re considered a vulnerable species in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are emotionally exhausted,\u201d Dr. Cynthia Stringfield, senior vice president of animal health, conservation and education at the zoo, told the Tampa Bay Times. \u201c[May 27] was just a horrible day. It\u2019s like a day out of your nightmares, pretty much \u2026 We\u2019re really focused on trying to get to the bottom of what happ<\/a>ened.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \u201cmeticulous\u201d investigation continues, according to ZooTampa\u2019s official statement, promising to explore \u201cevery possibility\u201d and issuing toxicology reports, though the data could take weeks to process. They\u2019ve also invited \u201coutside experts\u201d to join the effort, said Stringfield.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, some 1,000 zoogoers have come to social media to pay condolences to \u201cdevastated\u201d zoo staffers and share fond memories of their encounters at Stingray Bay.<\/p>\n

\u201cRIP little floating pancakes,\u201d said one fan of ZooTampa\u2019s fever \u2014 the word for a group of stingrays. The quirky comment offered a bit of levity to the solemn occasion \u2014 and drew nearly 50 likes of its own. <\/p>\n

Said Stringfield, \u201cThe outpouring of support and seeing how much those animals impacted the community \u2014 that was something really amazing.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
