Everything was in place Friday for Gary Sanchez to have a breakout game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There had been recent signs of improvement. He was facing the opponent he beats up on best, and the former teammate against whom he had previously homered.<\/p>\n

Then came four strikeouts in four at-bats during a 5-2 loss to the Red Sox, and suddenly Sanchez\u2019s pregame optimism about two weeks of hard work with Yankees hitting coaches Marcus Thames and P.J. Pilittere sounded like more wishful thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to simplify my swing in a way that would allow my hands to come out faster,\u201d Sanchez said through an interpreter. \u201cI really like the adjustments we\u2019ve made, to make my swing more simple and more at the ball. We\u2019ve got to keep on working.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fastest way for any Yankee to wind up in the fans\u2019 doghouse is to struggle in pressure-packed games against the Red Sox. Sanchez has taken a much stranger route to that destination. (Insert joke here with an analogy to his adventurous trip<\/a>s on the base paths.)<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because, against the Red Sox, Sanchez has numbers that defy logic. It\u2019s the rest of the games that usually bring out the boos he heard again after taking a \u201cgolden sombrero\u201d out of the No. 8 hole in the lineup in the first Yankees-Red Sox game of the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely tough [to adjust in-season], but you have to do it,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cIf I don\u2019t make the adjustment, what\u2019s going to happ<\/a>en to me? I don\u2019t know. You have to understand that if what you are doing is not giving the results you want then it\u2019s time to take action.\u201d<\/p>\n
