After a long and storied career in Hollywood, Roger Deakins<\/strong> would finally earn his much deserved first Oscar for cinematography with\u00a0Denis Villeneuve<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Blade Runner 2049<\/em>. And though the dynamic director and cinematographer duo won\u2019t be working together on Villeneuve\u2019s upcoming sci-fi film\u00a0Dune<\/em>, the filmmaker revealed that Deakins is still leaving his mark on the highly anticipated adaptation of the seminal Frank Herbert novel.<\/p>\n

In an episode of the \u201cTeam Deakins\u201d podcast, frequent collaborators Villeneuve and Deakins spoke about the lessons they\u2019ve taken from each other during their collaborations\u00a0on Villeneuve\u2019s\u00a0Prisoners, Sicario,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Blade Runner 2049<\/em>. More specifically, the lessons that Villeneuve took from Deakins, who won\u2019t be shooting Villeneuve\u2019s highly anticipated tentpole,\u00a0Dune<\/em> \u2014 that job will be going to\u00a0Lion<\/em> and\u00a0Rogue One<\/em>\u00a0cinematographer Greig Fraser<\/strong>. But though Deakins wasn\u2019t physically behind the camera for\u00a0Dune<\/em>, Villeneuve said the Oscar-winning cinematographer was there in spirit (via IndieWire):<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I am working with you, I\u2019m going to be in a position where I\u2019m going to learn about filmmaking every day. I\u2019m in a learning process working with you. It\u2019s very rewarding and exciting. Right now I am doing VFX on \u2018Dune,\u2019 and I found myself talking about light and asking for things and I\u2019m like, \u2018I know it\u2019s Roger.\u2019 I know that I can do things [because of Roger].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Villeneuve added, \u201cI realize how much sometimes the amount of things I\u2019ve learned from you. I\u2019m not saying you\u2019ll agree with me when you see the thing, but I just know of sensibilities that I strongly increased being with you and working on Blade Runner<\/em>. It was a formative experience. To design the movie from the storyboards until the very end by your side, it\u2019s insane the amount of things I learned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Villeneuve and Deakins\u2019 partnership has resulted in some of the most visually striking movies<\/a> of the past decade, and it always felt like a shame that Deakins wasn\u2019t available to shoot\u00a0Dune<\/em> as the pair had originally intended. But perhaps they could reunite for Villeneuve\u2019s next film, which the French Canadian filmmaker said will likely be a smaller affair, as he is beginning to feel the burnout from back-to-back sci-fi blockbusters\u00a0Blade Runner 2049<\/em> and\u00a0Dune<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be healthy for me to do something small,\u201d the director said. \u201cIt will be good to go back to the size of something like \u2018Sicario\u2019 where I am not having to dream about the design of a car or the design of a wallet or gun for months before. I can just embrace the scale for what it is. It will be nice to go there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The whole episode of Villeneuve and Deakins\u2019 conversation is worth a listen, especially the part where Deakins shames Villeneuve for having several Terrence Malick films download<\/a>ed on his iPhone. \u201cFor people who don\u2019t know. Roger was traumatized that I had The Thin Red Line<\/em> from Terrence Malick on my iPhone and Roger thought it was horrific,\u201d Villeneuve said.<\/p>\n
