Chaos erupted in Washington Square Park on Saturday as NYPD officers tried to enforce a newly-instated 10 p.m. curfew.<\/p>\n

Police in riot gear clashed with scores of parkgoers who stayed in the Greenwich Village space past deadline.<\/p>\n

At least 22 people were arrested for unlawful assembly and violation of park rules, according to law enforcement sources. Five cops were injured, the sources said.<\/p>\n

Video posted on Twitter <\/a>showed officers forming a line and yelling at people to \u201cmove back,\u201d as a public address system warned revelers to voluntarily leave the park or be subject to arrest.<\/p>\n

Police could then be seen using physical force, including pushing and grabbing, to separate those who formed a human chain in defiance of the command.<\/p>\n

At one point, cops behind barricades are seen firing an unknown substance at a man who lunged at them and smashed a bottle.<\/p>\n

An officer could also be seen pointing a taser at people as they marched the unlawful assembly back past the perimeter of the park, in another unverified clip posted to Twitter<\/a> Saturday night.<\/p>\n

Officers could also be seen gathering around a suspect who app<\/a>eared to be handcuffed on the ground.<\/p>\n

One cop was hit was a thrown garbage can, another pulled their shoulder while making an arrest, one suffered a possible broken finger, and two officers were hit with bottles, according to sources.<\/p>\n

Police and city parks department officials instituted the temporary weekend curfew amid complaints of rampant drug use, loud music and large gatherings in the center of the historically free-spirited neighborhood. Previously, the park\u2019s closing time was midnight.<\/p>\n

The NYPD said it did not have any details on Saturday night\u2019s clashes or information about the arrests when reached early on Sunday.<\/p><\/div>\n
