In a guest column at Bari Weiss\u2019 Common Sense site, Katie Herzog highlights<\/a> \u201cthe rapid spread of a deeply illiberal ideology in the country\u2019s most important medical institutions.\u201d Call it \u201cwokeness, social<\/a> justice, critical race theory, anti-racism,\u201d but some doctors \u201cinsist that it is threatening the foundations\u201d of patient care, research and \u201cmedicine itself.\u201d Warns one MD, \u201cWhole research areas are off-limits,\u201d and some work published in top journals is \u201cshoddy as hell.\u201d Purge victims include a cardiologist demoted by his university for a paper \u201canalyzing and criticizing diversity initiatives in cardiology\u201d (which the Journal of the American Heart Association then retracted without real explanation) and two editors forced out by the Journal of the American Medical Association over a podcast that questioned \u201cthe idea that medicine is systemically racist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: May China Pay for COVID<\/strong><\/p>\n

The world\u2019s preoccupation with flattening the curve and President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cracist\u201d rhetoric \u201cchilled any drive for accountability in China\u2019s role in originating and not effectively suppressing\u201d COVID, argues Jeremy Hurewitz at USA Today<\/a>. Meanwhile, China used its \u201crising global clout\u201d to control the World Health Organization\u2019s investigation of the outbreak. Now \u201cwe must demand that China fully and transparently account\u201d for COVID\u2019s origins, so the pandemic becomes \u201ca weight around China\u2019s neck,\u201d as it tries to \u201cassert itself as a global behemoth\u201d \u2014 reminding the world that \u201ca US system that extols democracy and transparency\u201d is \u201csuperior to the authoritarian Chinese model of cover-ups and repression.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schools watch: Charter Support Is Growing<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter years in the wilderness\u201d and \u201cwaning influence in Albany, charter schools are gaining a foothold in the city again \u2014 if the race for mayor is any barometer,\u201d reports Politico\u2019s Madina Tour\u00e9<\/a>. \u201cThe three leading candidates in the Democratic primary\u201d \u2014 Eric Adams, Andrew Yang and Kathryn Garcia \u2014 are all \u201cdecidedly supportive of charter schools,\u201d a dramatic shift from \u201cwhen Mayor Bill de Blasio was elected eight years ago and another sign of the citywide electorate hewing closer to the center.\u201d The head of the Achievement First charter network chalks up the shift to more political activism and polling that shows Democratic voters backing school choice for their kids. \u201cTimes,\u201d notes charter champ Jenny Sedlis, \u201chave changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Biden\u2019s Risky Date With Putin<\/strong><\/p>\n

The upcoming summit between President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin \u201cis riskier for Biden than Putin,\u201d warns Kurt Volker at Europe\u2019s Edge<\/a>, because \u201cany outcome that seems reassuring and benign on the surface actually works in Putin\u2019s favor.\u201d Putin leaving the confab without facing \u201cconsequences for his behavior\u201d would \u201csend a signal globally that \u00adauthoritarians can get away with aggressive acts at home and abroad.\u201d So \u201cthe best possible outcome is not one of modest agreements\u201d but \u201ca lack of agreements altogether. Success is confrontation.\u201d Ideally, Team Biden would \u201cannounce tough, new sanctions against Russia and its enablers in Western Europe in advance,\u201d which \u201ccould be lifted at a moment\u2019s notice if Russian behavior actually changes.\u201d Putin must see Biden \u201cis negotiating from a position of strength\u201d \u2014 which he certainly isn\u2019t now.<\/p>\n

Waiving intellectual-property rights for COVID vaccines and treatments, as some countries and even \u201cour own government\u201d demand, would \u201cundermine\u201d the very \u201ceconomic model of innovation\u201d that led to the speedy development by US and British firms of vaccines with \u201chistorically unprecedented effectiveness,\u201d fears Thomas Duesterberg at The Hill<\/a>. It might also \u201cunravel\u201d the international IP-rights regime, which \u201cincentivizes and rewards\u201d research and long-term capital investment, and then spill over to other high-tech sectors. Yet \u201cthere are better ways to achieve the goal of eradicating COVID-19,\u201d and if \u201cCongress truly cares about protecting American innovation, it ought to assert its constitutional authority over international trade to block this danger to domestic high-technology<\/a> industries.\u201d <\/p>\n
