Every maneuver costs fuel to fire rocket motors, and this fuel must currently be carried into space on the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX\u2019s plan is for its crewed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/\">Starship<\/a> vehicle to be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spaceflightnow.com\/2020\/10\/16\/nasa-selects-companies-to-demonstrate-in-space-refueling-and-propellant-depot-tech\/\">refuelled in space<\/a> by a separately launched fuel tanker. Official SpaceX Photos\/Flickr, CC BY-NC<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption\/><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Time_matters\"><\/span>Time matters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another challenge, intimately connected with fuel, is time.<\/p>\n<p>Missions that send spacecraft with no crew to the outer planets often <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> complex trajectories around the Sun. They use what are called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/basics\/primer\/\">gravity assist maneuvers<\/a>\u00a0to effectively slingshot around different planets to gain enough momentum to reach their target.<\/p>\n<p>This saves a lot of fuel, but can result in missions that take years to reach their destinations. Clearly this is something humans would not want to do.<\/p>\n<p>Both Earth and Mars have (almost) circular orbits and a maneuver known as the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/basics\/chapter4-1\/\">Hohmann transfer<\/a> is the most fuel-efficient way to travel between two planets. The next challenge is landing.<\/p>\n<p>A spacecraft entering Earth is able to use the drag generated by interaction with the atmosphere to slow down. This allows the craft to land safely on the Earth\u2019s surface (provided it can survive the related heating).<\/p>\n<p>But the atmosphere on Mars is about 100 times thinner than Earth\u2019s. That means less potential for drag, so it isn\u2019t possible to land safely without some kind of aid.<\/p>\n<p>Some missions have landed on airbags (such as NASA\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars-exploration\/missions\/pathfinder\/\">Pathfider<\/a> mission) while others have used thrusters (NASA\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/phoenix\/overview\">Phoenix<\/a> mission). The latter, once again, requires more fuel.<\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Phoenix Mars Lander: 7 minutes of Terror\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5TaP8YMM524?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">A thruster landing on Mars.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Life_on_Mars\"><\/span>Life on Mars<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A Martian day lasts 24 hours and 37 minutes but the similarities with Earth stop there.<\/p>\n<p>The thin atmosphere on Mars means it can\u2019t retain heat as well as Earth does, so life on Mars is characterized by large extremes in temperature during the day\/night cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Mars has a maximum temperature of 30\u2103, which sounds quite pleasant, but its minimum temperature is -140\u2103, and its average temperature is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/all-about-mars\/facts\/\">-63\u2103<\/a>. The average winter temperature at the Earth\u2019s South Pole is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/niwa.co.nz\/education-and-training\/schools\/resources\/climate\/antarctic\">about -49\u2103<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So we need to be very selective about where we choose to live on Mars and how we manage temperature during the night.<\/p>\n<p>The gravity on Mars is 38% of Earth\u2019s (so you\u2019d feel lighter) but the air is principally carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) with several percent of nitrogen, so it\u2019s completely unbreathable. We would need to build a climate-controlled place just to live there.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/human-spaceflight\/mars\/\">plans<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-plans-journey-to-mars.html\">launch several cargo flights<\/a> including critical infrastructure such as greenhouses, solar panels and \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 a fuel-production facility for return missions to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Life on Mars would be possible and several simulation <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/dear-diary-the-sun-never-set-on-the-arctic-mars-simulation-84597\">trials<\/a> have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-34092770\">already<\/a> been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/2019\/01\/see-how-astronauts-simulate-mars-mission-on-earth\/\">done<\/a> on Earth to see how people would cope with such an existence.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Return_to_Earth\"><\/span>Return to Earth<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The final challenge is the return journey and getting people safely back to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Apollo 11 entered Earth\u2019s atmosphere at about 40,000km\/h, which is just below the velocity required to escape Earth\u2019s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Spacecraft returning from Mars will have re-entry velocities from 47,000km\/h to 54,000km\/h, depending on the orbit they use to arrive at Earth.<\/p>\n<p>They could slow down into low orbit around Earth to around 28,800km\/h before entering our atmosphere but \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 they\u2019d need extra fuel to do that.<\/p>\n<p>If they just barrel into the atmosphere, it will do all of the deceleration for them. We just need to make sure we don\u2019t kill the astronauts with G-forces or burn them up due to excess heating.<\/p>\n<p>These are just some of the challenges facing a Mars mission and all of the technological building blocks to achieve this are there. We just need to spend the time and the money and bring it all together.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
