Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton on Sunday slammed cop-turned-killer Derek Chauvin for dealing \u201cunrivaled\u201d damage to the profession through his murder of George Floyd \u2014 but cautioned against the defund the police movement, calling more law-enforcement the \u201cessential medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning<\/a>, Bratton \u2014 who twice helmed the NYPD, in addition to stints as top cop in Los Angeles and his hometown of Boston \u2014 likened Floyd\u2019s death in Minneapolis to that of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man killed in July 2014 when he was placed in an officer\u2019s chokehold.<\/p>\n

Bratton, who was months into his second go-around atop the NYPD at the time of Garner\u2019s death, chalked up the outcome to poor policing tactics on the part of the two cops who busted Garner for peddling loose cigarettes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea of trying to take him down \u2014 just the two of them, and both of them were smaller than Garner; Garner was very, very big \u2014 effectively was just a bad tactic, and it ended up in a terrible tragedy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But Bratton said that neither Garner nor Floyd deserved to die.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo often in these struggles \u2014 particularly over minor events, such as the sale of loosies \u2014 nobody deserves to die at the hands of the police,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it happ<\/a>ens. It happens a thousand times a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Memorial Day 2020, Chauvin knelt on the neck of Floyd while trying to arrest him for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Floyd died gasping the same words that Garner did nearly six years prior: \u201cI can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDerek Chauvin\u2019s actions as an individual cop \u2026 did so much damage to the American police profession,\u201d said Bratton, who has worked in the private sector since 2016. \u201cUnrivaled. Damaged the profession around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chauvin was fired after Floyd\u2019s death, criminally charged and ultimately convicted of murder.<\/p>\n

Daniel Pantaleo, the cop who placed Garner in a chokehold, was fired in 2019 by Bratton\u2019s successor, James O\u2019Neill, following a lengthy departmental inquiry. <\/p>\n

Pantaleo was never charged in the death.<\/p>\n

Bratton said that while he supports many of the criminal-justice reform initiatives undertaken since Floyd\u2019s death, he is \u201cfrustrated\u201d by movements to defund the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to refund the police,\u201d he said, voicing hopes that a federal bill currently being debated would improve the national quality of police work without reducing its quantity.<\/p>\n

Among the provisions in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act are requirements that state and local police forces that receive federal funding ensure the use of body cameras and prohibit chokeholds.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019m hoping coming out of this bill in Congress \u2014 the George Floyd bill, when it comes out \u2014 is that it will effectively force government to spend resources on the essential medicine to fix this thing,\u201d said Bratton. \u201cAnd police are the essential medicine. That\u2019s the reality.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
