“#COVID lab leak theory was too quickly dismissed<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The theory that the novel coronavirus came from a \u201clab leak\u201d in Wuhan, China, was too quickly shut down at the start of the pandemic, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Rice, appearing on CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d<\/a> also backed former President Donald Trump\u2019s early travel<\/a> restrictions to China \u2014 and gave the Biden administration advice on how to get answers on COVID\u2019s origins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first is to recognize that there was too much of a tendency early on to dismiss this possibility of a laboratory leak,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think the press bears some responsibility for this,\u201d she went on.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Well, it had be animal to human transmission, these were conspiracy theories about a laboratory leak,\u2019 \u2013 and, in fact, some of the evidence was right in front of our faces.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said safety practices were already known to be substandard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we knew that there were patients back in November that had suspicious symptoms maybe that was a time to start asking tough questions,\u201d Rice said.<\/p>\n

Rice also told \u201cFace the Nation\u201d host John Dickerson that Trump was vindicated for his early China travel ban when asked if the US was too accommodating to China in the early days of the outbreak. <\/p>\n

\u201cWere we too trusting of the Chinese?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really good point, John,\u201d Rice replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, I think there were even those who said that President Trump\u2019s early decisions about border closures and travel restrictions were xenophobic or not app<\/a>ropriate. Turns out they were incredibly appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, yes maybe there was a little bit too much of trusting of the Chinese,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Rice, who worked under former President George W. Bush, said China had previously lacked transparency with how it shared information during the SARS outbreak.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
