Dr. Anthony Fauci \u2014 under intense criticism for recently revealed emails \u2014 joined First Lady Jill Biden at a vaccination site in Harlem on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Fauci, who has constantly shifted positions on the effectiveness of masks and the origin COVID-19, arrived with Biden around 4:20 p.m. at the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, one of several city houses of worship doubling as inoculation sites in recent months.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to end this outbreak with absolute certainty and the vehicle to ending it is vaccination,\u201d said Fauci. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why I\u2019m so impressed by being here and so honored to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

About 15 people were vaccinated during the app<\/a>roximately 40-minute visit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for setting an example,\u201d Biden told Annette Gausney, 92, who was getting the shot at the urging of her grandson, Shareif Jones.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not really afraid of needles anyway but, you know, it\u2019s pleasant when people are pleasant and [Biden] certainly was,\u201d Gausney said. <\/p>\n

The nonagenarian had been hesitant to get vaccinated because \u201cthe news<\/a>\u201d makes it hard to know what to \u201creally believe and what not to believe,\u201d Jones said. <\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI understand where she\u2019s coming from, though, since, like, what she\u2019s been through growing up\u2026[It\u2019s hard] to convince somebody, who is an elderly Black woman in America, going through what they go through.\u201d <\/p>\n

But he added, \u201cRecently, is like it\u2019s better to have [the shots] than to not have it, you know what I mean, so that kind of clicked in her head and we\u2019re here today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones revealed that the nonagenarian knew beforehand that the First Lady would be visiting the church \u2014 but only donned her glittering, sea-green mask and elegant purple dress to mark the sabbath.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Sunday so Sunday best,\u201d he said. \u201cShe always dresses up on Sundays.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many among those vaccinated, however, were at the opposite end of the age spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want to hold my hand?\u201d\u00a0asked Biden of one 14-year-old boy getting the shot.<\/p>\n

The teen, who did not give his name, shook his head \u201cno,\u201d drawing laughter from the crowd and praise from Biden as \u201ca tough one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re 14 so you\u2019re exactly who we\u2019re going for,\u201d said Biden, referring to a recent push to inoculate kids ages 12 and up. \u201cWe definitely want [people] 12 and over to get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some kids were excited to get jabbed alongside Biden \u2014 including 14-year-old Kera Beckles, who said it earned her bragging rights with friends. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d be like, \u2018Oh I just happened to, like, get the vaccination while the First Lady was here. Just solid flex, like hmmmm,\u2019\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

But other kids had no clue they were in the midst of political or public health celebrities. <\/p>\n

Asked how it felt to meet Dr. Fauci, 12-year-old Lazarus Harouna replied, \u201cWho? Who\u2019s that? I\u2019ve never seen him before in my life.\u201d <\/p>\n

Asked if he was excited to rub elbows with the First Lady, he said, \u201cIt didn\u2019t mean much, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside the church, however, dozens of protesters railed against Fauci, slamming his handling of the pandemic, including revelations made in a recently-released trove of emails.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not comply, Dr. Fauci!\u201d one man shouted through a bullhorn.<\/p>\n

Another demonstrator, who gave his name as Vangelis, confronted a pair of cops keeping the peace outside the church to demand that they take Fauci into custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cArrest Fauci. He was right there,\u201d he said. \u201cYou should have arrested Fauci.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fauci, President Biden\u2019s chief medical adviser and the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was assigned a security detail last year in response to threats against him and his growing celebrity.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
