For one thing, ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren (<strong>Patrick Wilson<\/strong> and <strong>Vera Farmiga<\/strong>) aren\u2019t dealing with a haunted house this time. They\u2019re also up against a human antagonist. On top of all that, unlike the two other\u00a0<em>Conjuring<\/em> films,\u00a0<em>The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> doesn\u2019t explicitly set up a spin-off character.\u00a0<em>The Conjuring<\/em> had Annabelle,\u00a0<em>The Conjuring 2<\/em> had the Nun. But\u00a0<em>The Conjuring 3<\/em> avoids setting up a spinoff altogether.<\/p>\n<p>But that wasn\u2019t always the case. When I spoke with\u00a0<em>The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> director <strong>Michael Chaves<\/strong>, he revealed that an earlier cut of the film\u00a0<em>did<\/em> set up a spinoff character \u2013 but that character ended up on the cutting room floor.<\/p>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post --><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-672477 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/the-conjuring-the-devil-made-me-do-it-e1621530042142-700x299.jpeg\" alt=\"the conjuring the devil made me do it early buzz\" width=\"700\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/the-conjuring-the-devil-made-me-do-it-e1621530042142-700x300.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/the-conjuring-the-devil-made-me-do-it-e1621530042142-360x154.jpeg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/the-conjuring-the-devil-made-me-do-it-e1621530042142-768x328.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Deleted_Demon\"><\/span>A Deleted Demon<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> works perfectly fine without setting up a spinoff, but it\u2019s fun to ponder \u201cwhat if?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t said this to many people, so this is [an exclusive],\u201d Michael Chaves told me when I interviewed him about the film:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe actually did have what we thought was going to be the new [spin-off] demon, and this is something that was true to the story. We had a demon that was full-on pulled from little David\u2019s interview and de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion. Arnie said he saw the same thing. And it felt like this was going to be the iconic demon. And [producer\u00a0<strong>James <\/strong><strong>Wan<\/strong>] was with this from the very beginning \u2013 James, Monster Maestro. And we shot it. We had a cut of the film with this demon in it. The demon worked with Occultist [memorably played in the movie by\u00a0<strong>Eugenie Bondurant<\/strong>]. It was the two of them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So what happened? According to Chaves, having the demon working with the Occultist made the movie too complicated. \u201cWe\u2019re introducing a human adversary, which was the first time that\u2019s ever happened in the<em>\u00a0Conjuring <\/em>Universe,\u201d the filmmaker said. \u201cSo all of a sudden, [the] relationship [between the Occultist and the demon] seemed a little hinky.\u201d<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->Chaves said that while they were making the movie, he was positive the demon character was going to be the next to get its own <em>Conjuring<\/em> spinoff. \u201c[But] sometimes they just don\u2019t quite click,\u201d Chaves said, adding that there\u2019s some precedent for this in <em>The Conjuring<\/em> saga:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe same thing happened in\u00a0<em>The Conjuring 2<\/em>.\u00a0The Nun was actually totally created in reshoots. The Nun didn\u2019t exist before. There was another demon in [<em>Conjuring 2<\/em>] that the Nun replaced. And so we were in a similar situation where we had this story, [and] it was getting a little too complicated. Thankfully, they were able to give Osborne another role \u2013 a patient in the prison infirmary who taunts\u00a0Arne Johnson (<strong>Ruairi O\u2019Connor<\/strong>), a young man driven to murder by demonic possession. \u201cThe guy who played the demon, incredible actor, this guy Davis Osborne,\u201d Chaves told me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe brought him back and he\u2019s actually the infirmary patient [who torments Arne Johnson in prison]. He did a great job in that. I was so happy. I felt so bad, my heart broke because I was like, \u2018Man, you did such a great job with that demon, but it does not work in the movie.\u2019 And so we figured out a way to still bring him back. But I think it goes to show the way these <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> are made, and the flexibility of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_3 --><\/p>\n<p>In the end, Chaves said he was \u201cproud\u201d his\u00a0<em>Conjuring<\/em> film didn\u2019t include a set-up for a spin-off, while adding that there are still elements in <em>The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> that could influence future\u00a0<em>Conjuring<\/em> entries. \u201cWhat I actually am so proud of is that [with] this story, we were already taking a step out of the familiar format,\u201d the director said. \u201cAnd New Line, James, everybody was on board with that. Our first plan didn\u2019t quite work, and we could adjust it, and tell the very best story with what we had. And I\u2019m actually very proud that this doesn\u2019t have that obvious spin-off. [But] I think that there\u2019s a lot of threads you can pull.
